I have a pana PT53wx42. Just bought it a week ago. I love it. I am very happy with it.
I noticed if you change the viewing angle sideways or view it from the top, that is when you are about 3-5 feet close to the TV, you dont see the image as bright as you see when you sit in front of the TV normal to the screen.
Do you think this is normal ?
What are the viewing angles for projection tvs, horizontally and vertically ?
On the sets I have owned (2), the horizontal viewing angle is wider. The vertical angle is narrow, you have to be close to the level of the screen.

Why is the vertical viewing angle so narrow ?

because its being projected on the screen kinda like a movie theater the closer you get from the top or bottom the screen goes a little darker thats the only disadvantage that a RPTV has compared to a direct view
I can't give you a technical 'why', probably has to do with the optics and the mirror. Ever notice how the HD RPTV's are set up in the stores? They usually sit on a platform elevated so they are at eye level. The earliest RPTV's had narrow viewing angles for both vertical and horizontal. We've come a long way :)

DLP based RPTV's have a much wider viewing angle than CRT based RPTV's.
RPTVs now typically have excellent horizontal viewing angles. They only suffer in the vertical, so lying on the floor watching an RPTV is not recommended, as is standing up. This is simply how they design the "dispersion screen".
If you remove this screen, as some people do, then you've got a problem with viewing angles, both horizontally and vertically.
