My wife has given me the go ahead to get a new set.The only catch is we have an entertaiment "armoire" that will only hold up to a 36".I'm looking at the Sony KV-36HS420.The customer reviews from various retailers look good.Any other suggestions?Oh yeah, Hi to everyone I'm new here. :D

First off, you better make sure that armoire can support a 230lbs TV. :) Secondly, IMHO, if you plan to watch a lot of HD or widescreen DVD's, get a 16:9 widescreen, with a 4:3 set the actual 16:9 image will be smaller then 36 inches from the need to letterbox it to keep it's ratio correct. If your viewing is going to consist of mainly 4:3 television then this might not be a bad option for you.

Careful! Your butt may not have the same sort of "load footprint" as a large TV. ;)

Well thats true,I do have a nice shapley rear and not a square shaped one. :rmoon2:
Seriously though, check out the HDTV FAQ on "4:3 vs Widescreen". There are other FAQs that may also interest you.

My wife has bought a couple of things from overstock.com and has been pleased with them. I'd make sure about the condition of the item at the very least. New vs. Refurb. If it's a good deal I'd buy online.

I just had a similar problem with an entertainment center.
I was looking at 36 inch 4:3 TV's to fit the space. My view on the aspect ratio issue is different from most on this forum.
If you want direct view (best pic quality and brightest pic, IMHO), a 36" 4:3 set displays about a 33" widescreen picture, but a 34" widescreen set (which will probably also fit in your ent center) will show only about a 27-28" 4:3 picture. I would opt for the 36" 4:3, because it gives the biggest combination of pictures for the space available. As mentioned, the 36" direct views are very heavy (as are the 34" widescreen direct views).
The 36HS420 is a very good set. The 36XS955 is a little better, but more expensive. Neither of these sets has PIP, if this is important to you. I also considered a Toshiba 36HFX73, which is discontinued but was still available in some places for less than $1000 (and does have PIP). I thought of the Toshiba as a "low cost option"
At the end of the day, I decided to buy a 42" plasma (believe it or not). Not many will fit in the ent center, but I checked the specs and found one with no speakers attached that fits. Obviously, this was not a low cost option . . .
Good luck - I know this is not easy!!!
