Is there an easier way to turn on/off CC than what I am doing? Seems like TV does not control it, only STB.

Currently, I turn off STB, go into STB menu, turn CC on and then turn STB back on. Then I have to do it again to turn it off. I want to be able to quickly turn it on and off. I find it distracting but sometimes it helps when you can't tell what someone just said - i.e. Deadwood, at times.

My TV/STB are listed below.

Fly,
CC should also be a button on your remote itself. I looked at my remotes for the different tv's and both remotes have a CC button. At least you should be able to access from the tv's menu. You shouldn't have to control it from the STB (some consumers probably don't even have STB's). Is there not a CC button on your TV remote?

For HD channels, the STB has to do the CC. The TV will not do it, unless it has a built in ATSC tuner.

If I recall correctly, the Motorola STBs do not have a CC button and it is a pain to switch back and forth as indicated in the first post.

In the SA STBs it's only a couple of button presses - settings, scroll to CC, turn on/off.

TVs without the ATSC tuner will only do CC on the SD channels.

Hello 57,
I don't think fly's question is for strictly HD channels, but even if it is, his origial TV remote should probably still have the CC button. With my HDTV that has the ATSC tuner built in, my remote has the CC button, and for my HDTV without the ATSC tuner built in my remote has the CC button. I don't use it often, but it is easily accesable.

Thanks guys. I will check tonight to see if I missed CC on my remote. Though, it sounds like for HD shows I will be out of luck as my TV does not have a tuner. Usually it's Deadwood that I want to use this on - HBO HD - as I hang on every word and there is usually several parts where I cannot tell what they say. I do not like to leave CC on all the time though as I cannot resist reading it and then I miss watching actors closely. It's a tough life...

I had to get a new STB from Time Warner today. I used to have a Motorola but now they only supply SA 8300HD. For HD CC the Motorola allowed us to change the physical display for CC so we experimented and found that black text on yellow background worked best for one of us who needs visual cues. I haven't been able to find anything like that on SA -- just ON, OFF, or ON When Muting -- and only in white text on black background. Is there a deeper menu that would let me change the default display? Thanks.

Don.

Press the settings button twice to get into the settings menu. There should be lots of options in there regarding CC (and other things).

This is all part of the functionality of the STB that you should become familiar with - read the operating manual for the unit.
