my surround receiver only has one Toslink and one Coaxial digital input/s. Can I safely use a splitter to have both dvd players connected for digital sound? My optical is occupied by my STB.

I wouldn't advise it. You probably will get sound degradation, if you decide to go with that option. Or even sound cut offs too.

Just my .02 cents

well, i only have one dvd player on at a time, and i figured since the SPDIF is a one-way signal, it wouldn't matter as long as only one was feeding into the receiver at a time

i ask because the only other option is to get rid of one of the dvd players or get a better receiver with more inputs, but i would rather make what i have work for now, thing is, i have to get the step ladder to get up to reach around the back to swap the cable from one to the other, it's a pain

Well, if that doesn't work for you. You can always use the basic red and white audio jacks, on the device that you use the least of.

just my 0.02 cents

Just curious but why do you need two DVD players?

One of these should work for your needs. Connect your STB with SPDIF and connect the DVD players with the Optical Splitter, should be fine.

This one definately states combining capabilities so check it out.

you know, i figured splitting the coax would be safer than splitting the optical, but i guess splitting the optical is a common practice, btw, i found that same one for $11.82 shipped, thanks for the link

one is a old toshiba, the other is a LiteOn DVD recorder, but believe it or not, the PQ of the old non-pro scan toshiba is better than the LiteOn with pro-scan turned on!! so i use both, each for different things

id go with new receiver- Onkyo 602 has 3 rear optical and 2 coax digital inputs. PLUS 3 Component inputs. Powered Zone 2..
I too use 2 DVD players One is for video and the other for MC audio...
This way If the kids are watching a DVD, I can listen to audio on the patio.

I'd hook up the Toshiba using digital. The LiteOn could be hooked via w/r rca plugs. Odds are wahtever your recording can be played back on the Toshiba or would not be in 5.1 anyway

true, i dont know if my recorder retains the DD5.1 sound or not, only used it once or twice to record, i dont like what i see so far, i had to modify the firmware code to allow me to make backups of my movies because of macrovision, but i dont like the inability to duplicate the menu's and such, think i am going to sell it or give it away and buy a dual layer DVD burner for my pc and do it "right"

saw an HP dual layer 16x DVD burner with Light Scribe at Walmart today for $100, mighty tempting

yeah, but have you seen the Light Scribe feature? you have to buy discs made to work with it, but being able to burn your own designs, logo's, etc...directly on the top of the disc is very cool, no more labels to mess with, that alone is almost worth the extra for the discs
