I have just subscribed to digial cable and they provide the motorola dct6400 for their service. My TV is a Philips 34PW8502/37 and supports 480p and 1080i. I notice that on standard channels the picture quality does not seem as clear as before when I just had basic cable. Is this normal or does it mean I'm getting a weak signal? The HD channels look amazing.

Also there is an option on the user settings menu for the motorola DCT6400. One of the options is - 4:3 OVERRIDE and is set to 480i. Should I change that to 480p since my TV supports that.

Thanks for any help

Please read the HDTV FAQ on "poor SD PQ", especially item 7.

see the FAQ

if your set supports 480p, set the override as such

and yes, PQ of analog channels even with a digital converter is worse than with a standard analog setup, my local comcast office says they are working on mapping those channels for all digital sometime relatively soon(read year or two)

Poor SD quality was something mostly all of us found, Bud. With adjustments, it can be fine though. With your override question, I suggest you look at the 480p option, and see what difference you see for yourself. One small caution, if set to 480p, bad 480i signals will then become worse (sort of grainy). Check both options out, and see what you want to stick with. Also, turn down your sharpness, and if you have Velocity Scan, turn it off. Those 2 things will halp as well.
