toshiba SD5700 unavailable anywhere

Are the new line of dvd players coming out right now? I had my heart set on the Toshiba SD5700 and now I can't find it anywhere...I need a PS DVD Player for around $250 or less that has premo quality...anyone know where I can find the 5700 or a substitute that isn't 400 plus?

Here's a review on the Toshiba SD4800 (http://electronics.cnet.com/electronics/0-6342369-1304-20097178.html) . It replaced the SD5700.

The unit is working fine but I didn't do alot of comparison shopping. I did look at the SD9200 but it was way outside my spending limit and probably not a wise investment with the way things are changing techinically.

I paid $179 for the SD4800. Doesn't appear to have the Faroujda chip.

Thanks for the info - I didn't realize that the 4800 replaced the 5700. I'd probably be interested in getting it, but I'm not sure what the following excerpt from cnet is getting at exactly:


"Owners of certain wide-screen TVs that cannot control aspect with 480p sources will want to note the SD4800's limited aspect-ratio control. The deck can display a progressive-scan picture on those sets without horizontal stretching but only for true 4:3 sources, such as DVDs of TV shows. Nonanamorphic, letterboxed movies must be viewed in interlaced mode. "

I've decided to return the open box hdtv that I was going to get and went with the HIT 43 fwx20b. I obviously would have a problem with a progressive scan dvd player that can't display widescreen movies in ps mode. Is this what cnet is telling us? I'm a little confused.

The SD4800 is the next DVD player in line below the SD9200. Not exactly sure its a direct replacement.

Check this link (http://www.hdtvoice.com/voice/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1044) in the FAQ's about stretch modes.

I don't have any issues with the 4800 and non-anamorphic DVD's. I have a couple DVD's in 4:3 that I haven't watched since I got my TV and DVD player. I'll check it out tonight and let you know.

Some HDTVs have two different component video inputs - one for HDTV, one for DVD. Perhaps the latter can be stretched, while the HDTV input cannot. Some newer sets can stretch just about anything...

One other thing, if you haven't decided on the DVD player you might look into the ones with the Faroujda chip that people are talking about. Which HDTV did you pick?

For 57U: I couldn't find that the new Panasonic DVD XP50 had the Faroujda chip. It seems to be hit and miss, the older models had it. I checked the link 'This Recent Post' earlier in the thread.

I have the Hitachi 43" fwx20b. Haven't received it yet, but it's on back order...hopefully in a couple of weeks.

The cnet statement said that "certain Hdtvs" have problems controlling aspect with 480p sources. Do you know if my hdtv is such a one.

I'm still a llittle confused. It seems like not being able to watch widescreen dvds in progressive scan mode is not just a little thing. Am I interpretting something wrong, or is this what cnet is in fact getting at? I can't imagine why any progressive scan dvd player that could not display widescreen dvds in progressive scan mode would get favorable ratings...considering that most dvds are in widescreen format. That's why I think I must be missing something.

I'd get the Toshiba over the Panasonic simply because the panasonic doesn't seem to offer much more in the way of picture quality and seemed to have the same types of comments about aspect control as the toshiba did. I'm not sold on any Dvd Player yet, just want to get one that plays everything I've got in progressive scan mode and has great picture quality. DVD-Audio would be nice, which is why I was leaning towards the 5700, but not essential. Guess I'll keep looking around.

Here's a link to the FAQ on HDTV Stretch Modes (http://www.hdtvoice.com/voice/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1044) . At the bottom is a section on the new Hitachi's. Not much different than my new Toshiba.

I setup my SD4800 when it was new and haven't touched it since. I do all the aspect 'stretching' modes with the TV. I can't imagine your new Hitachi not working with any good DVD player. I picked a Toshiba DVD because I had a Toshiba TV, but it really doesn't matter.

Oh, the 4:3 DVD worked fine, a TV movie called 'Merlin'. I just watched 'Ice Age' with the grandkids. The movie looked great. You are really going to enjoy your movies when you get all setup :)

I think you were reading something into the article. I don't see the problem. Your Hitachi will do all the aspect control or 'stretch' modes.
