looks like limited length high bitrate material on a regular DVD and using a regular red laser, but M$ and HP are pretty big in their own right, so this may go places....

Those dont seem to be new formats that will be competeing with HD-DVD or Blue-Ray, they are just things for the products specific use. the X-box thing seems to be pretty clearly only talking aobut their games, which have always had HD capabilities. And the HP things seems to jsut be a way to record from the HD tuner on a Media Center PC.

I dont think you will be able to buy movies for either of these "formats"

it may not be direct competition, but i think it will only add to the general consumer misinformation because you know they are going to market it as Hi-Def, and the fact that the movies on these discs supposedly will play on a standard DVD player

"But the discs will then be readable by any current DVD disc player and will "look better than the best commercial discs, especially if you have a new DVD player that upconverts the output to a 720p signal," said an HP demonstrator."

They can't market it as "Hi-def". They may use marketing terms to seduce but, caveat emptor.

This (IMO) can fall into the category of "superbit" DVD's and upscaling DVD players.
