I will say that I now have a different Tv than I did before. Kevin Miller is an ISF calibrator who works the tri-state area( NY, NJ, CT). He comes highly recommended on many sites such as CNET.com. He is very knowlegable and does not get upset when fools like me ask a million questions. He uses all the latest equip, and in about 2 hours time will get you tv set for peak performance. High def channels look even better. My DVD player (Sony 5 disk Progressive scan 480p) is unbelievable. He put in spider-man and oh boy. The best result from the calibration is SD. It looks twice as good as before, yes even stretched. It is now watchable. Overall, If you pay this much money for a set, I recommend getting it calibrated. If you live in the tri-state area , call Kevin. HE KNOWS HIS S@*t!. I cant say enough good things about the results from the job. However, I will only speak on Kevin's behalf, as other calibrators may not give you the same results.

Great, thanks for the feedback. Had you done any setup before he came?

I would sit with the remote day in, day out trying to get the best picture. I would get to the point where i wanted to throw it out the window of my house. With a calibration, your paying for the knowledge. He was able to make a good picture even better. My concern was SD which is still sad to say 90% of all shows. I hated bars and stretching looked like crap. It is now acceptable, and believe it or not some channels look amazing, like DVD. To answer your question, yes i played with every setting a thousand times, but i will touch them no more. peace

I'm thinking of ISF calibration also. What did your guy use for test signal/pattern for your TV SD/HDTV input? I know there are DVD discs out there for that input, but was always curious how they did the other inputs.

Thanks

He attached a handheld device to each input other than DVD. he then set it for optimal viewing for those inputs specifics.( i.e) one input was for gaming so he set it for best picture at 480p , then the sat box was set for 1080i per me. he suggested it anyway. He then went into the sets service menu and made minor adjustments until his handheld read what he wanted. Blacks look black now, colors are really great. He will write all the settings for you in case of anything, and give you the results. Worth every penny. I dont know what type of set you have, but if you spent a fortune like me, its worth it. Moreover, if its a panny, Pioneer or sony, it can look even better afterwards.
Peace

chugawoo,

Glad to hear you're happy with the calibration! The handheld device is an HD generator. It creates the patterns for the calibration in the specific scan rate like 1080i or 720p to match that particular input. Kevin Miller was the assistant instructor in my ISF training in 2003. He's a great guy and knowledgeable fellow.

CAn anyone suggest an ISF calibrator east of Toronto?

How far east of Toronto? Johnny Golitsis does work all around the GTA. Here's his website, but his rates are much lower than what's currently shown on the website, and he's more flexible on timing too. I believe he's making a trip to Ottawa in the near future. Tell him 57 sent you.

Edit - I understand that he's not got the equipment to do plasma at this time. I believe he was looking into getting the equipment, but hasn't yet... Sorry.

His rates are typically C$300 for CRT-based RPTVs.
