I hope this is not a stupid question but here goes.

If I purchase a new receiver that has 7.1 and/or 6.1 decoding will it also decode a DVD or HDTV signal that is 5.1? I only have 5 speakers + sub woofer at this time.

Thanks,

Steve

Certainly will decode 5.1 :D. 6.1 is a single rear center where 7.1 has two rear centers. I ran my 6.1 system without a center rear for some time. I don't know your reciever but my Onkyo 787 defaulted to 5.1, I had to enable the 6.1 (Dolby Digital ES or is it EX)

On Yamaha, I believe the 7.1 denotes the usual 5, plus 1 center rear, plus "two front effects speakers", 9 speakers in total.

Thanks for the replies.
