View Full Version : IEEE port activation?

This week, Cox cable in San Diego told me that they will only activate the firewire port on the SA3250, not the SA8000. As I would like to keep the DVR and don't want to pay for two boxes, this is annoying.
I thought they had to activate these ports, it seems like they are choosing not to activate it on the DVR box. Does anyone know if this violates the FCC decision that firewire be active? It seems like a slimey way around the law...

This doesn't violate the FCC ruling that took effect April 1, 2004. The cable company needs to supply ONE STB with firewire, not all of them.

None of the SA DVRs has firewire activated anywhere.

Might I suggest that you return to the cable supplier (or have deactivated) all the STBs you don't have to have the Firewire on, then insist that the Firewire be activated on your primary STB. Following activation of your primary STB you can activate your other boxes.

In addition here is the excerpt from the FCC ruling, note that following July 1, 2005 the cable operators can not purchase any STBs that do not have both Firewire and DVI or HDMI. Please note in the ruling the word "boxes" is used implying more then one and it also says "functional".

"Digital Cable System Transmission Standards and Support Requirements • Transmission standards – All digital cable systems must operate in conformity with specific technical standards. Small cable systems can obtain a waiver where the requirements would be unduly burdensome. • POD Security Cards – All cable operators must maintain a sufficient supply. • High-definition set-top boxes -

Starting April 1, 2004, cable operators must supply, upon request, high-definition set-top boxes with functional 1394 “firewire” connectors

By July 1, 2005, all high-definition set-top boxes would also require a digital visual interface ("DVI") or a high definition multimedia interface ("HDMI")."

I have a PDF file of the full FCC news release containing this requirement and would be glad to post it to the forum if desired.

1. Starting April 1, 2004, cable operators must supply, upon request, high-definition set-top boxes with functional 1394 “firewire” connectors

2. By July 1, 2005, all high-definition set-top boxes would also require a digital visual interface ("DVI") or a high definition multimedia interface ("HDMI")."1. They have an SA3250HD STB available to meet this requirement. It doesn't say that "all" STBs must have firewire.

2. They meet this requirement, no problem.
