I am concidering (put a deposit) the purchase of a Hitachi 53SWX12B, any opinions would be appreciated. Is the Hitachi worth the extra money over a Toshiba 57HX81?

Thanks

I learned a lesson long ago not to put a deposit on anything. Make sure of your purchase b4 you buy. Is this a used set?

I have the 53UWX10B model (which I believe lacks most of the audio capabilities of the SW model).

The Movie Theater Mode on the TV is incredible, this makes the DVD output look at least 2x as good as with it off. (this is the mode that enable 3:2 pulldown, but my DVD player has 3:2 pulldown, and it still manages to put a couple more filters on it).

The audio on my TV is fairly bad, but I don't plan on using the internal sound system for very long anyway (your model should handle audio better anyway). One of the problems I had was that the DVD player and TV both wanted to put the audio through 3 different filters, which just destroyed the sound, but turning all them off (except a couple) help tremendously.

I would have to recommend checking out epinions.com though to find how users like that preticular model though. That has been a good resource for me.

The only bad thing I don't like about this TV (and it may be the same for all HDTV's) is that it handles low resolution material horribly. TV is actually pretty good, but playing a PSX or anything with 240 lines of resolution is going to look WAY TOO sharp. No filters can be applied to them because the blocks are too large, so I actually have to run it through RCA connections to get a 'blurry' effect. Game systems like PS2, some DC games, and GC games looks great though, even with just S-video cables.

As for HDTV itself, I don't know ^_^. We only have two stations that broadcast here (PBS, and ABC) so I haven't laid down the money for the receiver yet.

I bought my tv as a scratch and dent model for 1780$ though, so it really was a steal. (down from 2600$) IT is quite huge though, I'm thinking a smaller 47" would have been better for the apartment, but that'll probably change when I actually get the receiver.

Good luck with your purchase!
(i really do love my TV, but I'm trying to NOT to be Biased with Hitachi though. )
