This is sad news for nintendo fans, you can read more here at www.ign.com :boo2:

what are you talking about? the rev can even connect to a computer monitor. Beside, nintendo never says rev won't support hdtv. Revolution does support online. Nintendo calls it, "virtual internet," or something like that, and unlike Microsoft, it's free of charge for first party games.

ok, I just read the news. No hdtv on rev, well that sucks. They still support online though.

Yeah let me clarify the online part, it looks like they will support online.

But's it's really dissapointing to have no HD support.Nintendo just shot itself in the foot in the long run, which is sad.

I tihnk I read somewhere that X-box live will come with the purchase of the 360, and will not be an additional charge. Not sure if you just get a free 1 year subscription and then you have to pay, dont have any details ont hat yet.

I'm pretty sure from everywhere i've read that xbox live will be free right out of the box, which would be a very good strategy to get everyone online fast and easily.

This was mentioned on Slashdot and they linked to an article that said, as of the end of 2004 only 10% of households had an HD television, and that number isn't growing as fast as we'd like to believe. Considering the enormous cost of adding HD to the Nintendo console itself and the huge additional cost of game development, I think they would be foolish to include HDTV at this time. Why jack up the cost of the console for only 10% of people? Even by the end of this console lifespan (probably 2009), the percent of HD households might be 50% if we're lucky. The new Nintendo console will likely cost $100 less than the XBox or PS3 because of it's lack of HD. It should have 480p however (like the GCN), so let's now get too down.

It's like they did with the online. The gamecube didn't go online because low numbers were predicted. To this day, probably less than 25% of console gamers play online so Nintendo made the smart move by waiting on the online service.

I have a feeling that very few development studios will produce games for the XBX and PS3 in actual 1080i, let alone 720p (which fewer HDTV's support). I'm predicting 480p will be the standard this generation, except for just a few high profile games (Gran Turismo).

You do know that xbox360 will require all games to be 16:9 at 720p as standards right?

Same goes for the PS3, every game will at least support 720p at a minumum.

No I didn't know that..The decision to do that makes no sense because most HDTV's don't support 720p natively. What we have now is that 10-12% of homes have HDTV's and only a very small percentage of those natively support 720p. Why would a developer spend the money to support 720p when nobody can natively use that mode and their TV can't upconvert?

Matt27

Sorry if i did'nt clarify this but here it goes:

all xbox 360 games will support 720p at "minumum" "AND" 1080i, so it should'nt be an issue.

The same would go for the PS3.

If your HDTV set does'nt accept 720p, then you would just select 1080i in the dashboard, so it a non issue.

Either way you will get to play the games in HIGH DEF, that's all that matters.

XBox 360 is going to have video scalers so that any game will work with your 1080i tv....

wait a minute! so does that mean that if I don't own a hdtv then I cannot play x360 and ps3 games because my tv doesn't support 720p.

I assume that both PS3 and XBX360 will also have a 480i mode for those who don't have HDTV. They just have to handle the marketing properly because you wouldn't want people to think it's ONLY HDTV compatible, and then not buy the console.

Yes, you are correct. The scaler will also downsample to 480i.

Please see the following article (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/624/624517p1.html) on IGN that lays it out for you.

"Sales of HD televisions are already on the rise and analog standard definition sets on the decline. While only 12.5 percent of U.S. households own an HD set now, the Consumer Electronics Association forecasts that the number is going to steadily increase. In 2006, by the time PlayStation 3 and Revolution launch, nearly 30 percent of all homes in America will have an HDTV. That's already a significant audience, but it gets bigger. In 2007, almost 50 percent of all U.S. households will own an HDTV and in 2008, a whopping 68.1 percent, according to the CEA. "

I think these numbers are quite compelling...

Nintendo has certainly missed the boat on this one. I think they are going for the under 12 demo rather than the 18-34 market with this move. Go Mario!

well that was basically the final nail in the coffin for nintendo at least for me.. i think they personally SUCK and the fact they wont support HD for their new system right there makes me NOT want to buy it, screw nintendo...

Same here,Mario is nintendo's little whore, he just keeps getting around.

Seriously nintendo it's getting old, i have grown up, you obviously hav'nt.

Also no need to worry if you don't have an HDTV set to play the xbox360 and PS3.

They will also support 480i, it's just that you won't get HD graphics that's all.It should still look good, but it will look much better if you use an HDTV since that is what the game is built around.

Untill then, i'm looking foward to the xbox360 and maybe the PS3, if not just for the blu-ray alone.

As always it will come down to what games you want to play. There will be great games in 480p, and poor games in 1080i, and the other way around. Just because it's in HD doesn't make it a better game.
There will always be a market for Nintendo and it's Metroid Primes, Viewtiful Joes, Resident Evils, Animal Crossings, and Legend of Zeldas.

Now wouldnt it be nice though if all the systems would come together and just make one awesome machine that way we could have the best of all three worlds...we would have tons and tons of games to chose from at that point...ok so I am dreaming.. on that note I will probably have to pass on the nintendo this time. Even though I love some of the star wars games that they come out with for them.

If their was no variety then life would be boring:D

Hence i like variety with game consoles since we buy them for their exclusives also.

a place for everything and everything in its place...

sony

microsoft

nintendo

all do both, hardware and software

and on the table we have the respective current and next systems from all 3 houses

ps3 - 360 - revolution

i own a 360, not really impressed - games look good, call of duty owns booty [pc version has much better control] - need for speed most wanted kicks tail [pc version can use my logitech 900 pro wheel]

future looks good for the 360 though - good games on the horizon

ps3? i want one, im going to have one - new technology makes me happy :)
bluray, linux, the almighty cell chip!!! - sony has all the big guns on its side, so game support is going to be topnotch...

coming soon to a store near you :)

and last... nintendo revolution [name change perhaps?]

anyone who has a bad thing to say about mario... well, what other game mascot is 20+ years old?

will we be playing as the master chief or jax in 20 years... i honestly dont think so... yet nintendo has zelda/link, metroid - and countless others

hell the could pull out the ice climbers or kid icarus and you'd remember them...

nintendo has pioneered some of the major tech advances in gaming [console]

+ shaped dpad, shoulder buttons, analog stick, rumble pak - all nintendo innovations...

those are just hardware changes - we wont start on game design

im not saying nintendo is better than etc etc

they arent - the company makes some seriously stupid decisions - too conservate, too family, too rooted in old school traditions, scared to buck the system, etc etc

but they aren't going away - especially after this next round of goodness

the ds is outselling the psp in all territories - and the revolution

well, if you know anything about playing games - then you know as a kid you used to try to lean the controller left and right up and down cause it was just natural

which company is making that a reality?

...
