NTSC (National Television Standards Committee) is what ANALOG television transmissions have been in the USA all these years. It is the standard for old school american television.
ATSC (Advanced Television Standards Committee) is what DIGITAL television transmissions are... , for instance, any of the 17 DTV formats including 1080i, 720p, 480p 4:3/16:9, and 480i 4:3/16:9.
Europe uses PAL as their analog standard. Maybe Japan too.
