I remember long ago I had a 'difference of opinion' with some of the moderators on this board about DVD being as good as HD. I was told emphaticly that I was mistaken and that in no way could a DVD (by todays standards) could even compare to HD especially when all DVD's are encoded in the 480i format.
Well while looking at one of this sites sponsers websites it seems that the tide has changed. I quote:
"All our High Definition DVD titles are encoded in native 720P format and offers great enhancement in the visual video quality. It is the great show case to see what is the real "high definition".
Please notice: All our High Definition DVD titles will ONLY be played by our HDV108 and HVD208/2081 HD DVD Players."
So, is HD DVD already here? :sherlok:
720P/1080i/1080P via component, HDCP is not required.
1280x1024/1024x768,800x600,640x480 via VGA
720P/1080i/1280x1024/1024x768/800x600/640x480 via HDMI, HDCP is not required.
First DVD Player in the world that supports 1080P* (1080 Progressive Scan).
PAL 720P/1080i ( 720P/1080i @ 50hz ) is supported.
*Your display device need to be 1080P compliant in order to use this video mode.

That's still correct.

All of "their" DVD titles are encoded in 720p. How? I don't know. AND, they are only compatible with their DVD player.
So... what "titles" do they offer? First run movies?
I'd be curious to see.
So, is HD DVD already here?
In a sense I guess... but only with whatever titles THEY offer and with their hardware.
HD DVD has been here for a while in a certain sense.
For example, you can burn HD information to a DVD, however, you'll not be able to record a full movie, due to the storage limitation of "regular" DVDs.
Also, HD DVDs that you can buy (WMA, etc) can only be played on computers or DVD players that are also connected to the internet to "maintain the security" of the original material.

Actually Ratman, if you're ever in a mellow mood ;), try watching Hero. It has excellent cinematography, some interesting swordplay scenes and the story is a Chinese legend regarding the formation of China.

My "mellow" days a far behind. :)
Although Chinese history is captivating, I prefer listening to a movie in English.
But... while on the subject, have you done any reading about Li Ssu in Chinese history? Quite interesting!
have you done any reading about Li Ssu in Chinese history? No, sorry, but I have been to China several times. Before there were many cars - early 1990's. My wife and I rented bicycles in the cities we visited - Guilin, Xian, Beijing. Very interesting places. Probably a lot different now.
I also have an excellent picture of Tiananmen square that I took at night. I did a "bulb" exposure of about 30 seconds and set off my flash part way through, exposing the people. That way the picture looks like ghosts walking on Tiananmen. (It's 35mm and I didn't get it digitized - yet)

Well... we all know that the newer DIVX style Mpeg-4 encoding are far tighter than the old MPeg-2 they used for the original DVD standard...
I sorta wish they would forget about this HD-DVD & Bluray non-sense, and just start shipping MP4 encoded movies on the standard 4.7gb disk. It seems like it would be much cheaper to just upgrade existing DVD players (its usally just a firmware change!) than to re-tool the entire DVD industry for HD.

They have been around for a while in Asia.
The neodigit player is based on the Chinese formats, EVD and HVD which suports MPEG-2 compression with proprietary encryption schemes. It supports up to 150 minutes of 720p MPEG-2 content using a red laser. Don’t expect suport of this format State Side (movies).

"So, is HD DVD already here?"
For a small unique market of movies, yes.. mainstream, no..
When I can walk into my local Best Buy and pick up the newest releases in HD, I'd say it was fully here..

So even though my Dave Matthews Band DVD says it is HD it is not? Wonder how theey get past that false advertising?

If it's a standard DVD it's still encoded to the disc at 480i... It might have been recorded in HD video then converted down to DVD... The DVD technology you have is not going to magically start outputing HD resolutions, you should know that by now.

I realize that Matt. I was more or less curious as to if it would play in HD on a HD player.

It's not 'false advertising'. Taking advantage of those that don't know any better? Perhaps...
The labels reflect 'mastered' or 'filmed' in HD or with HD cameras. Existing DVD formats are 480i.
The DMB disc will be able to be played in an HD-DVD player and possibly in a Blu-Ray player (if backward compatibility issues are resolved) at 480i... the encoded format.

I hope they go with a standard soon, it's driving me nuts!!!
Both are so similar now that which ever one they pick will give you a beautiful HDTV picture.
What so hard in making a universal player to solve the issues? Should'nt this easily rectify the situation?
Any thoughts on this for a universal player.

Do the current DVD players have the physical ability to output a 1080i signal?
Ratman

Yes... obviously upscaling players do. And physically, all DVD players outputs (component,HDMI,DVI) are probably capable also (with the proper firmware).

Had the same thought, and low and behold I came across this on a blog I visit.

Honestly, there is a Universal DVD player out there, and its the HTPC (or a modded XBOX).
Using a $99 ATI video card, any old POS 500mhz PC would be able to do HD output effortlessly.
The key is that an HTPC is upgradable. DVD player's aren't. I don't care that they only cost $50 vs an HTPC's $500. You get sooooooooo much more with your HTPC.
Hell... the solution can be even easier...
Use FireWire to hookup a DVD reader to your SA-8300HD DVR. Send a firmware update to decode DIVX.... VOILA!

And all DVD burners/players for PC's use red lasers. It has no relevency to HD-DVD/Blu-Ray.
So... when one, the other or both formats are available for PC's you may have to choose one, the other or a 'universal' (if available) burner/player.
What applies to standalone players also applies to PC hardware.

Hopefully they will make a universal player.
Heck, why not include 5 free HD movies of your choice to go with the purchase if they want to sell these things like hotcakes:)

Well is HD-DVD players here check this out from JVC PRO division -
http://pro.jvc.com/prof/Attributes/press_res.jsp?tree=&model_id=MDL101546&itempath=&feature_id=08
I have VC-1 movies T-2 in 720P format and this is the first stand alone player capable of showing it ...
Most people are unaware that the Parent company Matshu****a ( Panasonic ) owns 51% of JVC so this is an ironic offering given the Blueray camp ....
