View Full Version : New STBs and Multipath

I live near the local TV stations (about 5 miles) and, therefore receive a very strong signal. However, due to many tall trees surrounding the house, I have multipath problems which become intolerable when there is rain/wind (my signal keeps going from very strong down to almost no signal, then back up to strong again). Currently, I use an LG LST-3510A STB.

My questions. Are there any STBs currently on the market that are particularly good at dealing with multipath? Or does anyone know of any STBs that should be on the market soon that will deal with multipath issues more effectively?

Thanks

None yet, the 5th gen LG chip is supposed to help with multipath and I've seen a few reports that someone is working to put it out in an STB, just don't know when yet.

At that distance and perhaps high power, have you tried to use an attenuator? Maybe reducing the signal may help in your case.

You didn't mention what antenna you are using and where it is located.
Can it be moved or raised?

I've been using a RS UHF Yagi located in the attic. Since writing the original post, I acquired a Winegard SquareShooter and placed it next to the (now retired) Yagi in the attic. After about a week's viewing, it appears that 95% (or better) of my multipath problem has been resolved. Until I got the SquareShooter, I was beginning to think that my only option was to install the antenna outside, perhaps with a rotor.

I considered, but had not yet tried, the suggested attenuator. The reason I had not tried an attenuator was that, although I'm only about 5 miles from the towers, the signal strenth was at about the 70% level on the signal meter. At that strength level, I was concerned that the attenuator might reduce the signal too much and perhaps aggravate my reception problems.
