I live about 30 miles north of the of Detroit (Southfield) broadcast towers. I just mounted an 18" square Weingard SquareShooter on the side of our house underneath my Dish Network 500. Wow, is this little 18" gray box antenna ever amazing us. I'm getting 90+ percent signal strength from seven different OTA digital signals from the Detroit (Southfield) towers. And it's all in a little 18 inch square cube!! The SquareShooter is VERY directional, so you may have to mount a rotor to it if you want to recieve from several directions. We give the Weingard SquareShooter two thumbs up. Awesome.

Thanks...we do not have the UPN and WB HD stations available to us in Milwaukeeland from TWC because of their not caring to deal with Sinclair so if you have an intergrated HD set (one with a digital tuner) these SquareShooters might even work at 35 miles away or better, like 40-50 miles from Chicago (where I am) for these stations?
I think they almost attractive to look at, aren't old fashioned looking and will try one in my attic (two story home) as their website shows.

Unless your going to mount it outside, kind of a waste spending the extra money for an attractive antenna. I have mine mounted next to my dish, it's the SS-2000 with the pre-amp built in and I'm 40 miles from the Baltimore towers.

That's the back side of it anyway but you can see how I mounted it.

Ok, I will attempt the outside without rotor just to get the HD channels TWC doesn't want to deliver...40 mile range should just about fit.
Thanks!

I've been having lots of problem with multipath since the leaves came out on the trees. Signal strenght has not been my problem, just serious multipath. After trying various indoors "rabbit ears" antennas like the RS 15-1880 and trying various full-sized UHF yagis and UHF/VHF antennas mounted in the attic, I was about ready to install an outside antenna with a rotor. Before resorting to an outside antenna, I decided to give the Winegard SquareShooter a try (mounted in the attic right next to the retired UHF Yagi). It's been three days now and NO multipath!!! I'm holding my breath, but this may have been the solution. I haven't even tried to fine-tune the positioning yet. Just pointed it in generally the correct direction.

For those of you considering the Winegard SquareShooter, the SS-1000 is being sold under the Terk brand name at Best Buy. Even though it says Terk on the packaging, the antenna itself is definitely the squreshooter (it even has the Winegard "W" logo on the antenna itself). It's cheaper on the internet, but buying it locally is much less hassle if it doesn't work for your situation.

If anyone else has had success in reducing or eliminating multipath with the SquareShooter, I'd be interested in your experience.

The SS is designed to fight multipath, it's very directional and has a block on the back to reject signals from behind.

kind of a waste spending the extra money for an attractive antenna. It's 2-3x the price and 1/2 the proformance of the 4228a!
Besides, what's "attractive" about a square box anyway??

It's more attractive than a 3 sq. foot 'crow swatter'.

Amen and a "thank you" from my neighbours!

Do you want one that works or is 'artsy fartsy'? Sounds like suburbian mentality; NIMBY's

If they don't like it, move!

Personally, before buying the the Winegard SS, I was prepared to hang trashcans, a chain link dog pen, or anything I could think of from the chimney if it solved my problem . . . and to X?#?? with what the neigbors thought.

Please, folks, the point is the SS works good if not great, has potential to work into an indoor or outdoor environment
-looking better than a "crow squatter" from the 1950"s. :D

As for not caring what my neighbours think, perhaps those that do not hold what theirs think in any regard must have really awful ones, but I do have great neighbours.

Thank you.

mgjohnson: thank you for your insightful review and I will take it under advisement as a constructive comment. :)

Sorry folks . . . I intended my comment about my neigbors as a joke. Thought it would be taken as such.

Hate to say the SS-2000 hasn't been cutting it this summer with all the leaves on the trees around me, when I first installed it, it was fall and it worked well all winter for me. I'm going to upgrade to something a little higher gain, the 4228a and 7775 pre-amp (in case I need it) have been ordered. I should have a SS-2000 with power supply for sale shortly.. :)
