View Full Version : 1080i forced into 720p, is that a good idea?

I wasn't sure which forum this was more appropriate in- so I took a shot here. Mods: Feel free to move to the most appropriate place if this isn't it.

I've been watching the Golf lessons program on INHD, and my Moto DCT6412 is set to output 720p via component and dvi. I noticed at the beginning of each episode, it says Presented in 1080i.

So the question to me is, if the source is in 1080i and my cable box is spitting it out in 720p, would it look better in 1080i ?

Did you try?
Use what looks best to you. There is no right or wrong.

Like I said, I have my cable box set up for 720p output through the component/dvi ports. So I am watching all my HD stuff in 720p. I've set it back to 1080i, and don't see any noticable difference- which is why I asked the question ;)

1080i material will look better on a 1080i native set than if it is 1080i>720p> box converted and then 720P>1080i TV converted, thats for sure unless your set is of such
low resolution that that it cant display any more detail than a 720p resolution signal anyway....

Depends on the TV, STB and perception. To each their own.
Let the individual decide for themselves.

Question that you can best answer for yourself, but here is what I do: since most HD is sent in 1080i I leave my STB set on 1080i. This allows my TV to do the conversion to 720p (I have a dlp too and native resolution is 720p - you realize that your TV is displaying at 720p, right). When Fox or ESPN is showing a game I will often turn off STB and reset to 720p figuring it may handle the motion better. But overall, I cannot notice much of a difference if I have my STB on 1080i or 720p...it's all good!

I actually think FOX in 720p looks nowhere near as sharp as INHD's 1080i on the baseball games. Has anyone else noticed this?

I have. I've also seen alot of variations between other channels and even where they are playing. For instance, when the Sox play Toronto and it is on INHD it looks awesome. Actually, I saw another Toronto home game once, forget the opponent, and that looked really good too. Must be the stadium or maybe they use a local HD broadcast equipment company that is really good. Nothing like those games when HD has that extra pop to it! The Sox games when they are on NESN look real good too. Better than ESPN - go figure.
