I currently use TimeWarner cable hooked directly into my TV with no box so I use my TV tuner...

I am getting ready to purchase a Sony HDTV and subscribe to TimeWarner Digital Cable (full digital programming in my area) In my new setup I would like to be able to record HD on a DVR and continue to use my existing analog TV in another room.

I have the following questions....

As I understand it I could plug the TimeWarner digital cable into a CableCard and be up and running - - however....

1) If I use the CableCard in the TV how do I hook up to my Amplifier for surround sound?

2) If I use the CableCard how will I hook up a DVR?

3) If I use an HD Receiver / DVR (perhaps the Sony DHG-HDD250) why am I paying for the CableCard and tuner in my new TV?

Now the big question - - If I go with digital cable how do I support my existing analog TVs and continue to use their tuners....

4) Does anybody provide a digital receiver that does an analog feed for analog TV?

5) Can I continue to use my current analog TV tuners or do I have to purchase some sort of converter box?

I apologize for these basic questions and will certainly appreciate your help.

Thanks

John J

1. If you use cable card slot that the New Sony offers I believe it has an optical out for you to connect to amplifier. You can usually see the back of the set at Circuitcity.com

2. If you are going with Time Warner and you want to record HD you'll need to lease their STB and not the cable card.

3. The features for this tuner (Sony DHG-HDD250) state: Digital Over The Air, Analog OTA (you'll need an antenna of some sort for OTA), & analog cable (same as plugging straight to the set you have now). Tuner is mandated, and the cable card or STB is authorized by the provider.

4. You can consider the S-video or composite connection from most STB's such a feature.

5. The digital conversion will mainly effect OTA, your cable line to your set should continue to work or digital tuners will be pretty cheap to obtain.

The easiest way to go is to hook the TWC DVR via component cables ( DVI or HDMI if possible) There is an optical out on the back of the STB that you can hook to your receiver. If you are worried about having multiple remotes the supplied remote from TWC can be programmed to control almost anything, just read the manual.( i.e. You can change the primary volume control to your receiver)If you are going to use the TWC DVR you really have no need for the integrated tuner and cable card.

For the big question you can either get boxes for the remaining tvs or you can just hook them straight from the wall like before. You will only get channels 1 thru 100 depending on your area and tv. I have a HD8000DVR from TWC hooked up to my HDTV in the living room, a moto STB hooked up to the 19" analog in my bedroom, and cable straight from the wall to the analog TV in the kid's room(no cable box). The cable from the wall to the STB is what makes it possible for you to get digital cable. with that channel 1-99 are still analog and everything over 100 is digital.
