Hey all,

I'm new to the forum and new to HDTV.

I recently purchased a new Sony NS975V DVD player that supposedly up converts the video to 720p/1080i when you connect via the HDMI output.

When connected to the HDMI port on my Mitsubishi WD52525 all I can get is a 480p "signal". That is to say that the TV registers an input and the 480p connection but it does not show a picture. The DVD player has a light on the front indicating a good connection for the HDMI output. It will not recognize the TV's HDMI input.

I am able to hook it up to a Samsung 32" LCD monitor that also has the HDMI input and it works fine.

I have changed all resolution settings and found the the DVD player works perfectly via component inputs. Sony says my TV isn't HDCP "certified" but Mitsubishi says that it is fully HDCP compatible.

Anyone got a clue what I'm doing wrong with this? I really wanted to see what that upconverted signal looked like! :(

Well, I own that player and it definitely can upconvert to 720p or 1080i. When you say it doesn't recognize the TV's input what do you mean? Are you getting a black screen? Make sure you turn off "playback memory" (it's on by default) while you are trying to get the HDMI resolution configured. If you have a DVD you are testing with and had it connected via 480 with playback memory on it will store those settings on the disk and when you restart it will revert back to those settings. Set your resolution to the default of your display, in this case 720p. Have the TV on and the HDMI input selected before connecting the player. Post back and let me know if you are still having problems and exactly what you get on the display.

Sony says my TV isn't HDCP "certified" but Mitsubishi says that it is fully HDCP compatible. As far as I know ALL devices with HDMI are HDCP compliant. The only difference is to what version of the specification (1.0 vs 1.1). There are a few differences between the specifications but not anything that would keep you from connecting and displaying a picture as 1.1 devices are backward compliant.

Thanks for the advice.

What I mean by it not "recognizing" the TV's input is that there is a HDMI light on the front of the player that will light up when it has a good HDMI connection. This light will not come on.

I turned off the playback memory. Set the resolution setting to 720 x 480p. Then turned the TV to the HDMI port. THEN I plugged the HDMI cord to the DVD player.

The TV goes from no input to a black screen and it shows the input as 480p.

The TV goes from no input to a black screen and it shows the input as 480p.I'm confused. If you want an upconverted signal you want to set the player to 720p NOT 480p unless you want the TV to perform the upconversion. In that case, you might as well buy a standard progressive player. Have you tried either 1080i or 720p? Also, there is a progressive button on the player that toggles (between auto, video, and normal (interlaced)). This is mainly for the component connection but should be set to normal when using the HDMI. Obviously if it works with another TV you need to look at a possible setting or problem with the TV.

That was my error. I was going off the front number instead of the back one. I did the same process with the DVD HDMI res set at 1280x720p. My TV still registers a 480p signal with a black screen. I also made sure the playback was set to "off" and that the DVD player progressive button setting was on "normal".

I'm not really sure what else to do. One other member of the board had the exact setup that I did (DVD player and TV) and he had to take his TV back to get it replaced. I think I've just got a problem with the two units syncing up.

If I take the DVD player up to my bedroom TV (Samsung 32" LCD) and hook up the HDMI cable, the light on the DVD player comes on when I power it up so I think the DVD is fine.

Not sure what else to try. Is there a way to "reset" everything on this DVD player? I had no idea that the setup was that "picky" when I plugged it all in so I could have had it wrong from the start.

Thanks for trying to help. I really appreciate it.

It doesn't sound like a problem with the player. Perhaps the TV has a bad HDMI port. Are there any stores in your area with that model of TV where you can test your player? If so, that's what I would suggest to totally rule out the DVD player as a possible cause. I think Best Buy carries that model.
