View Full Version : Question for DILA Owners - Fan Speed

Have had my HD52Z575 since last September and love it so far. However, I have a question . . .

Last night, after the set had been on several hours, the fan noise suddenly increased (sounded like it sped up). We had the volume set low at the time, so the sudden increase in fan noise was very noticeable. Nothing else seemed to change. Sound ok, PQ ok, etc.

Anyone else had this happen? Anyone with any thoughts as to why this might have occurred. As far as I know, this set does not have a temperature sensor that increases fan speed when the bulb gets hot. I've already posted a question to JVC support, but would like to get user feedback as well.

Thanks.

A most curious situation. I also own the HD-52Z575 which I've had since late March and haven't encountered any sort of increased fan noise. In fact, most nights when I have the set on, I barely hear it at all, even when I hit mute. I'm no expert, Tomel, but it might be some sort of anomaly with your particular set. In any event, I would make a record of the times you've experienced the increased fan noise, if it becomes more frequent, I'd get in touch with JVC again and let them know about it.

I would talk to JVC as well.

An update. Here's my experience with JVC so far

Phone call - They said to unplug TV for an hour to "reset" the TV and if that didn't work call JVC local authorized service. I explained that this didn't make any sense at all, since a system "reset" won't make the fan stop running faster intermittently. I asked whether the set had a sensor that turned on more fans when the temperature rose (the set, apparently, has three fans) or made the fan(s) run faster. He simply could not answer my question, just repeated that I should try and "reset" the set.

First E-Mail to JVC - No response

Second E-Mail to JVC - Informed me the set has three fans (trust me, that was their response to my question which apparently they didn't read -- they just saw the word "fan" and gave me a canned response).

Third E-Mail to JVC - Directed to person who responded to my second e-mail and emphasized my question regarding sensors, temperature, etc. were not answered. It's been 5 days and no response.

The fan is still occasionally "speeding up", but no other change in PQ, etc. This may well be normal, but it would be nice to know -- and I'm starting to get frustrated trying to get a simple answer from JVC to a simple question.

Update - Sent another follow-up e-mail to JVC. Still no response.

Update - Still no response from JVC. Does anyone out there have an e-mail address or phone number that can get me higher up in the company. The standard customer service (phone and e-mail) seems to be totally inattentive to customer needs. It's not like I'm asking them to replace my TV, just answer my question about whether the set contains sensor(s) to either speed up or turn on/off the fans.

Just an idea....

You may want to contact a LOCAL service shop and talk with "tech" in person....

Most big companies aren't set up to handle a request such as yours.... If it's NOT a frequently asked question... the CS people aren't going to have that info.. and getting thru to the right people is going to be "hard".

A local tech that has worked on,,, Or has access to internal documents may be able to better answer your questions. (I for one would like to know also since I just purchased a JVC 61z575).

Common sense would say that as temp increases the fans would speed UP.. and as temp goes down fans slow down to cool set as needed.. and keep fan noise as low as possible when NOT needed.

It is not uncommon for air cooled electronics to increase fan speed when systems get hot or for high altitudes. Was it hotter than normal or do you have proper air space around tv?

Another reason for a fan "speed up" is that sometimes the lubrication of the fan gets "thinnner" as it warms up, allowing the fan to run at a higher speed, without any variable speed control. I'm not sure how these fans are lubricated, or IF they're lubricated.

arejohn59 - temperature was not materially different that it has been, but it could have been just a tad warmer. Ventilation should be adequate. The set's not in an enclosure and the fan vent louvers are about 7 1/2" from the wall.

What I find strange is that the fan speedup has only occurred several times and did not occur during the first 9 months I've owned the set. I've noticed on this forum and others, that fan noise of the dila sets has been a complaint for some owners and not for others. I never understood why people thought it was loud before, as I could barely hear the fan and then only when the volume was turned down low. HOWEVER, when I get the "speedup" that I've mentioned, THEN I understand the complaints since the fan noise is definitely loud and distracting. Maybe there IS a heat sensor and the people that are complaining the most have the set in a warmer environment than those not complaining?

I would think there WOULD be a sensor, for the reasons I posted previously., and the reasons you mentioned above. Please DO post back what you find out. I would think a local tech shop should be able to access service bulletins, and I would think there IS a service bulletin about FAN NOISE... how to address the issue, and how to address customer complaints/ concerns.

I'm not looking at the service manual right now, but there are sensors that sense temperature that shut down the set when the temp goes too high, so I would think a similar arrangement would be in place to either sped up, or slow down the fan depending upon the temperature.

PS: PLEASE DO REMEMBER TO POST BACK whatever you find out.

I get the same from answers from Sony, check with a local tv repair shop. I see another guy had some probs with his sret and they wanted like $800.00 to fix it. he ended up with a local guy who did the job for $100.00! Question/ do you have a pwr surge protecter? sounds like it's getting too much juice. good luck!

leevitalone . . . I've got the set on a APC UPS with automatic voltage regulation so that can't be the problem in my case.

WeAreNotAlone69 . . . I'm going to try the local authorized repair, but have had problems contacting the guy that's their JVC expert since he's frequently in the field and not very good about returning phone calls. I'm also going to keep bugging JVC since I dont think it's two much to ask that they respond given my investment in their product.

Tomel,

The tech is going to be your best bet. I understand you wanting to get thru to someone at JVC directly, but most large corporations don't allow a "consumer" type customer access to those that may be able to answer your question.

You and I get the consumer grade tech support (I.E. Unplug the set from the wall type response)... and a "Tech", will, or should have access to JVC tech support directly and will have access to the service bulletins.

Post back, and post part numbers', etc if say a service bulletin says to replace xyz fan, or controller with an updated part. (or if the fans/sensor/ or control circuit is just plain "bad".) There should be some type of bulletin about fan noise since people do complain about it, and in that bulletin should be a description of how the colling fans are supposed to function.

Just as a thought, you said you have the unit plugged into a UPS.... I'd put a voltage meter on the circuit to double check everything. Your UPS may be undersized, or just plain getting "tired" , or just plain defective in some way... so it would be worth monitoring over a period of several days just to be on the safe side.

The local authorized dealer didn't know - they just replace modules! Wrote another e-mail to JVC and finally got an answer today. Their response was:

"Unit has only one sensor. The temperature sensor will be activated when internal temperature exceeds the predetermined level."

Hey, it only tood a little over two months to get this answer.
