Hi all. Cool forums. Maybe someone here can help me out. I own the KP-51HW40 and am very pleased with it. Ive had it for almost a year now and have not expearianced the infamous "flickering problem", Thank goodness. Anyway I got the Sony DVP-NS700P Progressive Scan DVD player but noticed some issues when using component out on my Sony projection tv. When in progressive mode using component out I get alot of color banding. Mostly noticable on darker scenes. Some discs are worse than others. I switched over to S-Video and WOW what a difference! The Color banding has completely dissapeared and the picture seems crisper. I was under the impression Component out was the best video signal?? S Video looks far better to me. Everything was hooked up properly and I spent the money on Monster cable. Im very pleased with S video but I feel a bit frustrated since Im not taking advantage of my Hi-scan progressive capabilites. Any thoughts on what caused the color banding when using Component out? Fix? Should I get a better DVD player?
SilverG60, welcome to the forum:
You could try turning off the progressive scan (PS) feature and still use component out. It has been posted here many times that an interlaced signal can look better on many TVs than PS, especially if you don't spend big $ for a PS DVD player.

Thanks! Tried that and the banding was greatly reduced.
Im sure my set needs a good calibration. When I was watching Star Wars Episode 2 I noticed there is a slight ghosting outline around Charactors bodys. It could be just the video quality.. I have nothig to compare it to. Should a DVD look crystal clear when being played on a Sony Hi scan TV? Dont get me wrong the picture is beatiful I just want to know Im getting the best picture.
Thanks,
Nick

Hey SilverG60 whats funny is I had the exact same setup as you do except I have the WS500 instead cause I did have the flicker prbob. But anyway I havent noticed any color banding coming from the NS700P DVD player I have. I always have it on PS mode and never have any prob. Id call Sony and maybe see what they say...

Well I ended up getting the Sony NS715P DVD player. Being that we needed a DVD player in the bedroom we put the older NS700P there. Well with the NS715P player the color banding is GONE in progressive mode. :D Excellent picture! The two players are very close but but there are differences. One of the more noticble changes was the DAC proccessor. The 700 has a 12bit / 54MHz Video D/A converter. The 715 has a 12bit / 108 MHz Video D/A converter. How significaint these numbers are Im not sure, but on the screen there is night and day difference. Im very happy now with the picture quality. Thanks for your guys responces.
