HDMI and DVI are the same when it comes to PQ, don't know if either one would solve your problem. Are you seeing these issues on HD channels, SD channels or both?

Directv's digital channels are not as good as cable's digital channels, b/c directv has to compress each channel more than cable inorder to fit 800+ channels on one satellite. However, digital cable is not 100% digital. All of the channels that you can receive without a cable box (basic cable channels) are analog. Though, I have heard that some cable companies are now starting to broadcast these channels in both digital and analog.
As for Directv's HD channels, I cannot say if they're compressed or not, b/c I don't know.
