PBS HD limited hours.

I checked my UNCTV website about the availability of PBS HD TV and this is what I found:

"If you do not subscribe to Time Warner digital cable, you can see UNC-HD only from 8-11 PM."

Is this standard procedure across America with PBS, that if you try to get PBS HD with an antenna, then you only get three hours each night?

No, we get PBS-HD here 24/7. Our local PBS does multicast and on one of the subchannels they switch from PBS-Kids to a simulcast of PBS at 4:00 pm.

We also get PBS HD 24/7 (Spokane and Detroit). There are, however, a lot of repeats during the day and on following days. Some PBS stations may be low on money and cannot afford to keep their transmitter up all day. I know Detroit used to shut down in the early morning hours.

The programming on Spokane and Detroit was identical, so Rogers now only have Spokane in order to save some bandwidth.

Well, thats interesting, that some states have PBS HD 24/7, while others like NC, do not. I believe that you are right, 57U, about it being economics. I had heard before that some of their budget was axed. Guess I need to increase this year's donation and send it early!

Oh man, "Capturing the Killer Croc" is on tonight at 11:00. I really wanted to see that one. Let me know how it is, you lucky PBS hounds! Now that is must see tv. :)

The local PBS station, WUNC-HD, only broadcasts HD from 8PM till 11PM daily. They have a total of 5 PBS channels: WUNC-TV regular digital programming, WUNC-HD HDTV, WUNC-KD Kids channel, WUNC-ED Education, WUNC-NC Local programming. Since I receive these on an antenna (OTA) for free, I can't complain. I can receive 23 channels for free. 2 are Spanish, 1 is Music videos, 2 are religious, 2 are weather and news, and 2 are duplicates. But, the rest are great.
