My $.02 is that there's no in-between: Good-looking cable runs are either COMPLETELY hidden or they're COMPLETELY not.

For the first category, I'm talking about in-wall runs, under floors, stuff that, when complete, is virutally unseen. This is almost always an option if you've got the cash. I've even seen installers route out a deep groove in plaster for a wire run, patch it, and re-paint the wall. THAT kinda thing is impressive.

For the second category, depending on your decor, you might be able to use a really cool (and old) piece of pipe, custom copper, or something else industrial-looking to act as a conduit. Many types of wires are available with gobs of color options for their jackets, so even some clear acrylic dairy tubing can look really cool in the right environment.

Bottom line: If you want your system to look like the ones in the ads (all components, never a wire in sight), you're going to have to invest in time, planning, and materials.
