Like most, I'm in the market for HDTV. My first thoughts were either the Hitachi 57S715 or the Toshiba 57H94(both I think have built in tuners where I could receive local HD via OTA now). But I am a DirectTV customer and will probably upgrade to DirectHDTV later on roughly 4 or 5 months from now. Should I spend for the built in tuner now or go with the HD ready and wait. I'm looking to spend $2000 or whatever for around a 57 inch model. Or would the 57 inch monitor plus Direct HD receiver be close in price with the two above mentioned TVs. Last what would be a good HD ready monitor in the 57 in range if I went with the monitor. Thanks

If you're going with D* in the near future, I wouldn't pay the extra $$ for a built in tuner. All D* receivers have an OTA tuner, so IMO, it's a waste.

OTOH... if you want HD via OTA today and can't wait the 4 or 5 months, it's a call you need to personally make.

Isn't it true that most larger HDTVs on the market today have built in ATSC tuners, by regulation? Whatever's left "on the shelf" is a different story. The tuners originally added significant $ to the price of a TV, but today, I believe the number is quite small.

Most of these TVs also have built in QAM, meaning they can receive unencrypted cable (See the HDTV FAQ on that subject).

Yes... you are correct. Not sure of the the 'size' though... but, there is a 'cutoff'.

Well today's my 40th birthday and I'm going for HDTV. I'm going to purchase a Toshiba 65NH84, plus a DirectTV HD receiver today. I've been watching a 32" RCA, but tonight I plan on watching the Braves in HD, 65inch style. Wish me luck that everything works as planned right out of the box. I've got a :D smile like Bob on the enzyte commercial.

I might be mistaken but I believe it is anything above 40 inches.

Happy B-day Porkskin good luck on your purchase, should make for a nice gift.
