I have a Comcast supplied 6412 (replaced a 6208) and have noticed that HD recordings that were broadcast with 5.1 sound are played back in stereo.
Anyone seen this? If so, is this a configuration issue or a firmware issue?

I have the same box with Adelphia and have never experienced this. What is your version of the 6412 and what firmware are you running?
You may also want to post this question at www.dvrchatter.com. It is a site dedicated to Motorola 6412 HD-DVRs with Comcast Cable.

HD recordings? Do you mean recorded on the PVR?
Are you 100% positive that the broadcast was in fact 5.1?
How do you know?
Not breaking your chops. Just curious.
Not all HD programming is 5.1

Thanks for the pointer to the dvrchatter site; I've sent an e-mail to Comcast; I hope to hear something from them in the next few days.HD recordings? Do you mean recorded on the PVR?

How do you know?Yes, I meant HD recordings (sometimes called PVR, sometimes called DVR). How do I know? Simple: I have a Toslink (optical) output from the 6412 to my surround sound system. I select an HD channel broadcasting in 5.1ch, as shown on the surround sound's status indicator. I record a bit of the content. I stop the recording. I select the recording I just made, and start playback. The output through the Toslink shows 2.0ch rather than 5.1ch.I was doing overnight recordings of recent films and noticed that they were all 2.0ch on playback, so I ran this little test.
I consider my chops bent, but not broken.

Edit: Just heard back from Comcast; they're not aware of any config or firmware updates for my problem, and will have a service person out to check/replace the unit on Monday.

I have been complaining all along about those 6412 DVRs. I don't care if Comcast replaces them freely. I can't recall any home entertaintment electronic component with so many bizarre glitches. Just because we dont have to buy them doesn't mean we should have to put up with all this garbage. I for one would buy a quality HD DVR from a different manufacturer if it would work with Comcast. :mic:

I have a DCT6412 through adelphia. I know that some programs are advertised as being 5.1, like NASCAR on NBC. However, either the local NBC station or Adelphia downgrades the audio to DD stereo in the broadcast. If you hit the info button it will say stereo but the commercials say 5.1 surround sound.

When I watch ABC nothing comes in 5.1, contrary to what my receiver says. The NE/Oak game, Lost, Housewives, etc.. Receiver says 5.1, but only sound in front left and right speakers. All other channels play 5.1 when they are supposed to.
