Just how important are these two features when buying an HDTV?
I've been looking at two Philips 30" 16:9 models:
-8402 Is newer, has FAR superior connectivity, 2D comb filter, tons of ease-of-use features and is about $100 less...
-8420 Has 3D comb filter and 3:2 Pulldown (and only 1 component in).
I'm a movie watcher...PS2 is broken, so which one of these TV's will have the best picture quality for MOVIES coming from a progressive scan DVD player, and HDTV programming coming off a Charter set-top box???
Is 3:2 pulldown achieved by my progressive scan DVD player anyways?
Also: Is it true that DVI and Component in's bypass the comb filter all-together??? &... If I do use a PS2 with 2D comb filter, how bad will it be?
Just a Noob who needs some expert advice...
Thanks
1. A comb filter can be important for incoming analogue signals - either directly from antenna or cable, or via composite video connection from another device like a STB.
If you're only going to be seeing digital signals, a comb filter is not adding anything and all TVs have them anyway. S-video, component video and DVI/HDMI signals are not "combed" by the TV.
2. 2:3 pulldown is not too important if your DVD player has it. I thought most TVs also had this feature.

3:2 pulldown is only applicable to 480i sources.
Comb filters are only applicable to composite of RF sources.

That's not really fair...
He's not stated a price.
You have not provided any price comparisons or reasons.

Im actually buying a refurbished HDTV from an authorized reseller...so im saving a lot of money to start out. (& it comes with a $100 4-Year in-home warranty! :) I've looked for refurbished Sony dealers, but came up empty.
If you could point me in the direction of a Sony, Panasonic or Samsung refurbished reseller it would be greatly appreciated.
RATMAN: what do you think of Philips TV's when comparing to those other three brands?
If looking at a refurb, you may wish to look into UECWEB (Hitachi).
Not too many people have Phillips, so when looking at sites like this one, you'll find a lot more information on TVs like Hitachi, Toshiba, Mits, Sony... if you need tweaking or repair information...
If you haven't done so already, have a look at the HDTV FAQs.

Here are some threads from other Philips refurb buyers:

Generally Philips are considered bottom of the barrel in HDTV sets.
IMO opinion if your getting a crt direct view get either a sony or a panasonic

By whom?
C'mon Matt... I know Sony owners love their TV's, but can you provide the poster some facts?
The guy is on a budget too. Why not provide some suggestions?

Yes i have a fact, i use to own the 30" philips 30pw8402 and it was'nt that great at all and started developing problems later on.
Which is why i don't recommend philips since their customer service sucks for one thing, and the quality overall was just cheap.
You get what you pay for, and in my case $500.
For a better alternative try Samsung.

So... basically what you're saying is that you had a bad experience with Philips and recommend anything but...
having a bad day today?

Kind of, i don't think i got enough sleep either yesterday
But yeah that's just my opinion with my experiance from them, since a while back i called their customer support for a vcr part for a philips vcr and i finally got a call 6 months later.
6 MONTHS LATER!!!
Not good customer service if you ask me, on top of that it was from another country :boo2:
My advice, buy a reliable brand like sony or panasonic, heck even Toshiba even though they don't make crt's anymore.
Thankfully though they still make their own LCD's and RP CRT though, with LCD being their main focus now which is good since there is a lot of room for improvements in the future.
