I'm in the market and was talking to a "salesperson", He said the new Second Generation DLP's are still old tech because the have the inherent problem of the color wheel (any rotating piece of equiptment will fail given enough time) and the newest (best) tech. is the Lcos (JVC) or the Sony (same thing)....any opinions? :usa1: :shootout:

The "newest" tech, may have some bugs to work out too???

DLP seems to be fairly reliable based on the feedback here, despite the rotating wheel and the million mirrors.

There are pluses and minuses to all the technologies, more important than a rotating wheel too. See the HDTV FAQ "Types of HDTV".

All DLP (non front projection) TV's use a 'color wheel'.

LCoS is a similar chip technology, but does not use a color wheel. But both are comparable in PQ (contrast, color, off-angle viewing, etc).

I've seen both. IMO... I'd lean towards LCoS. DLP's biggest disadvantage is the "rainbow effect". And I always lean towards devices with the least amount of 'mechanical' parts that could fail after time.

If the new JVCs, Sonys with SXRD in the 50-60" sizes and the Hitachi sets coming out soon with the 1080p displays, all using LCoS look as great as the Qualia 006 and better than the JVC 720p I have also seen/setup, great, I'm in.
Sometimes I see rainbows with DLP and the mechanical "extras" have got to be problem-prone over time, so I'd stick with LCoS and recommend it.

Though I cannot find them on their website (yet) I believe the Hitachi 1080p LCoS sets are coming out in November.

My 70VS810 may be continued (LCD RPTV) as are the 50" and 60" models (different numbers) since the MSRP of the 70" LCoS is $8,499 and the corresponding pricing is higher than the LCD models.

Both types of displays will make great sets, you just have to decide what you want from Hitachi (or any other manufacturer) in terms of budget, screen size and what looks good to you.

I am sort of glad I got my Hitachi when I did at $4999 on sale with stand plus extended warranty, tax and delivery. I don't want to think what even a discounted LCoS will cost on sale, but I'll bet it will be worth it for some buyers. :)
