View Full Version : Signal Strength

Hi All,

maybe some-one can help me understand how to read signal strength on SA8300HD.

Here is my issue, I had a problem with my 8300 placing black bars between the grey side bars when viewing 4:3 analog channels. So I decided to try cablecard which actually worked great, problem was resolved and in fact analog channels are much better than via the 8300HD.

So I put a splitter so that one cable goes to my TV set that has cablecard and another that goes to my SA8300HD.

TWC tech put this thing in the back of my mind telling me that I was going to see signal strength deteriorate.

Now since that day I keep looking for imperfections and spend more time trying to find faults in PQ (very annoying habit). Since Panasonic TV set (TH42PX500U) doesnt have any way to tell me what signal strength is I went into diag on my SA and found the values below. Can anywone tell me if they are acceptable, poor, average etc? Maybe this will put my mind to rest!

Tuner1 and Tuner2 both at 15 dBmV (tuned to HD channels)
FDC: 6 dBmV
RDC: 54 dBmV
QAM SNR:37 /38

I have no clue what the above values mean but I am guessing they give a clue on signal strength.

Thanks for any clarifactions and help.

Sal

PS: PQ is OK, aside from the little voice in my head telling me it is not OK, driving me crazy.

Tuner1 and Tuner2 should be in the range +10 dBmV to -10 dBmV. I suspect that if you took the splitter out of the loop and ran the cable straight to the 8300, you would see the 15 dBmV number change. However, if you are not getting any video/audio breakups, these numbers don't really mean much. Digitsal is different than analog, you either get a signal or you don't. Mine has been as bad as -19 and I still had a stable signal and no problems.
