I am on the phone with my dad right now and he is trying to set up this tv for OTA digital channels and his satellite. I don't have a "built in" tuner so I don't know exactly how to hook this up. Where does the sat plug in? Also, on the remote, what is used as the . or - to go directly to a digital channel?

52G886 does have a built in tuner -- there should be a plug into the input

On the back of the TV there is a coaxial connector that has "Digital In / Cable / Air" (and maybe CATV, whatever that is) I think that's what it says, I'm at work and the TV is at home, but when I connect the satellite output line to it, I get nothing. I am changing "input" when I do this to the "Digital-In" and there is nothing and I have checked all the other input sources, nothing. I called JVC and they told me to hook the satellite to Input #3, when I asked why not Input #1 they didn't have an answer.
I checked the JVC owners manual and it says to consult my satellite installation book. I feel like I am the only satellite owner to buy a JVC TV at this point or they haven't heard of satellite TV. Yes, I can upgrade to a Dish HD receiver and use the HDMI connector, but I shouldn't have to, should just work.

Although there were a few TVs several years ago that had satellite tuners, I don't believe there are any today. An ATSC tuner can receive OTA and in some cases QAM (unencrypted cable), but not Sat.

You will need an HD satellite tuner as we discussed previously and then connect it appropriately to the TV.

The OTA (antenna) signals go into the SAT receiver, which can usually pick up OTA as well. The receiver then sends the converted signals to the TV. Or you can connect the antenna to the TV and have the TV pick up OTA (if it has an ATSC tuner, but then, as we previously discussed, you'll need to switch inputs on the TV.

Unfortunately, no 14 year olds and not willing to have another kid just to hook up a TV. I finally know what CATV stands for and last night did some work on the dish itself as Dish failed to show up for yet another set up appointment. I grounded the dish on the house and that helped a lot. I now have, I would say, a fairly decent picture off my satellite box. I can live with this picture. I looked at my cables from the dish itself to the splitter box inside the house and have at least two different size/types of cable coming off the dish coming into the house (there are three lines coming in). From this website I have learned this is not a good thing. I called Dish today and told them this and they are saying it could be a problem.... but they installed it, not me. So we now have an appointment to re-wire the entire thing from the dish to the TV's and possibly re-pointing the dish for a stronger signal. I was going through the settings and have one satellite that only has a signal of 68 and have two that are in the middle 90's for strength. I gave that information to the dish rep over the phone and they felt it should be stronger than that in my area on a clear night. So, am making headway and want to thank everyone for their help especially 57U, you've kept me heading the right direction and I appreciate that, thanks!

OK, now a new problem. Dish came out with their top tech and they have concluded that it isn't their transmission that's the problem, the problem, according to them, is that some TV's especially HD TV's have SD tuners that aren't so good. I argued that what he was telling me was that in this expensive TV they cheated on the most common tuner in favor of the HD tuner when there are so few HD channels out there. Any comments? Could this be true? I have a JVC TV that is just so so in SD but a good HD TV? I don't buy it, to you?

First of all, why would Dish care about what kind of internal tuner you have? The signal coming from the sat goes to their box, and leaves as a video signal via component/DVI/HDMI, or whatever connection scheme you choose to use. Bottom line is after it leaves their box, tuners have nothing to do with the signal.

...unless they're hooking you up via the RF-Coax out to channel 3 of the TV tuner, which is of course the "worst" type of connection and should not be used for STBs.

I agree with you but I feel I have a terrible picture with Dish. I'm hooked up currectly with S-Video. Tonight they are supposed to come out with a HD receiver and let me look at it for a bit and then either I buy it or they take it back. With this new HD receiver I will hook up with either HDMI or Component cables. That will answer the question about which hook up is the best for me in regards to the picture.
I actually got my best picture with my satellite going into my coax 75 ohm connection.
I did go to a store that sells TV's and has HD and regular digital feed and watched several HDTV's and I hate to say it but the picture on the HDTV's on regular digital feed was less than desirable. I understand it is below HD but I would say it was blurry and the faces in the crowd at a baseball game were unreconizable. Peoples faces, around the nose and mouth, is where I notice the problem most, kind of blurry, and like they have steaks or lines the length of their faces.

The football game at the home theater store I was at watching the 62" 1080p Mits DLP sets had a 70" JVC set, black, not silver on a nice stand with the same game.
The size of the set seemed bigger than the next-to 70" Hitachi set because the speakers were at the bottom and the picture was so much brighter.
The JVC won me over and I had wished I could have waited for their 70" set over my Hitachi, but its still a good set. Home Theater gave it a 88, a great scoring, as the recent 60" Sony SXRD got a 94. I give the JVC about 91 as I saw it and better if I had a chance to calibrate it!
