View Full Version : Possible THX Cable problem?

I recently purchased a Toshiba 26hf85 and am pleased with it so far. I have ran into one problem though. While my satelite receiver is running I notice horizontal lines running across the screen and they are really noticable when the screen goes black. It was ruining the quality of the picture so I checked these forums and found out it may be my S-Video cable. I guess they are allowing interference or something. I took it out and put back my old composite cable and the image is good again. The Cable is a THX "Monster Standard". They aren't the most expensive cable but they certainly aren't cheap. Is there anything I could do, short of returning them, to fix this glaring problem?

The other set are my THX Component cables for my DVD player. The image is actually better with Composite cables which it should not be.

Lastly, assuming the wires were working perfectly, should there be a great difference in quality from Composite to S-Video, and from Composite to Component?

Thank you for listening.

On a 26" TV, you probably won't notice a huge difference between composite, S-video and component, but each step up should be slightly better. See the HDTV FAQ on "Cables & Connections".

It appears you have some sort of ingress to your S-video cable, perhaps from something next to it?

Also, make sure the TV is properly set up - see the HDTV FAQ "What you need to do to your new HDTV".

If you can take the Mon$ter cables back, perhaps you can do so and get yourself something less costly. Although Mon$ter are typically good quality, they are very expensive for what you get. See the following example.

The wire set up is okay, and I have used Avia for the picture. Since it's happening to both sets of cables (THX brand S-Video, and Component) it must be the cables. I can't imagine what else could be causing it. I also have a PS2 hooked up if that means anything. The only thing I know is the composite cables are producing a nice clear picture so I'll leave them for now and return the "higher end" cables to Future Shop asap.

Thank you for your help, it is appreciated.
