I've been looking at Philips 30" 16:9 HDTVs, but have opted to go with either a Toshiba or a Samsung. Any opinions as to which brand makes higher quality HDTV's?
Thanks

Get a Samsung. Sony is overpriced. I have a samsung txp3064w and its great. i ended up buying a samsung hlr4667 DLP because i was so happy with samsung. Not to say toshiba is bad, but i have had nothing but excellence with samsung.

I have a Toshiba 30hf85c and i love it...also has a hdmi input so great for new receivers.i chose it over a 42 inches Samsung projection tv..Reviews were not good on Samsung tvs.
Sony! :)
U R A SONY freek let me guess U also drive a Honda. go with what suits your needs ,what features do you want and or need ,my sony friend with a kv30hs420 wishes her PQ was as good as mine everytime she comes over she regrets spending the Xtra cash. I'm not saying go Toshiba but think outside the box JVC has a great 30" out as does Samsung chk out Cnet do a Google search etc. SONY IS NOT THE BEST!!!!

You should take a look at the Sony KDL-32XBR950 LCD, it has a great picture.
Also the Sanyo HT32744 is a nice set.
Both of these sets had great reviews and I have seen them in action, very nice.

I'm not a big Sony fan. I find their picture to be overly sharp to the point of being unpleasant.

I do drive a Honda, and one of the few built Honda's really built in Japan
What planet did you come from?Sony is the best for a CRT display,I'm only persuading the poster to get his moneys worth that's all.And for a CRT display you can't go wrong with a Sony!

Sony I would stay away from. Every time I get a Sony product it breaks. Maybe it just me, but I don't have very much luck with Sony.

Buy a Sony.
Here's what I experienced:
I first bought a Samsung 30txp but it had terrible geometry and dynamic "barelling", so I had to return it. So I gave up on the Samsung HD CRT's. Then I tried the Toshiba 30hf85c - it also had some dynamic vertical wavering but not nearly as bad as the Samsung. There were other problems( white at top of tube in HD) so, I had to return it for its 26" brother (26hf85). The picture was better but the white haze at the top in HD was still prevalent AND in when viewing DVD's the picture would skip(bounce) ever 2-3 seconds so I returned it and bought a Sony 30HS420(I would have gone for a 30XS9555 but they don't sell them up here in Canada). The PQ was excellent. I already owned a 36HS500 but did not know these other brands had SO many problems.
So learn from my bad experience and if you have the money buy a SONY and save yourself a headache. If the XS model is too pricey then consider the HS. SONY has the best PQ in the direct view CRT market - my eyes have seen it!
I know it might have been my bad luck that I bought defective TV's but I also saw these same symptoms on the display models as well.

The sonys sets made in Mexico are the ones that are likely to be problematic, if you have one that's made in the U.S.A like mine, then it's of higher quality and less likely to have problems.
I've had mine for little over a year now and it 's been flawless,no issues what so ever, very reliable like my previous Toshiba 24" flat screen.
However if you can't afford a sony, then i recommend Panasonic or JVC, very good tv sets that are comparable to sony.
