View Full Version : should I fear MPEG-4?

as a purveyor of high-definition television sources, I am somewhat concerned by the migration to this new standard of compression. Since the signal I received is coming from my cable company, the picture I am receiving is already somewhat compromised. Will this new codec result in a picture that is less clear and vibrant than the one I am seeing now?

The transition to MPEG4 does NOT apply to cable (or OTA).

It wouldn't surprise me to see cable start using MPEG-4 or some variant in the future.

With a cable card set, is the de-coder in the set or the cable card? I doubt you'll see the cable companies switching if they are going to render all these new cable card sets coming out useless.
