Using the wide button to toggle through the picture format modes I noticed that mY 42"er doesn't have the "normal" mode. It has "full", "zoom", and "wide zoom". The owners manual indicates that there should be a "normal" mode, where the 4:3 signals will have bars on the sides. It appears as if the "Full" setting is operating like the "normal" setting should. I know the manual also says that "normal" is not available for some signals, but I can't get it to work on any channels?? Any input wouild be appreciated.
Some TVs have an "auto aspect" or "auto stretch" mode which invokes one of the stretch modes. There may be a menu item wher\0\0?j??\0\0\0\0j??s off. You should be able to force "normal" then.
Most HDTVs cannot properly stretch incoming 720P or 1080i signals, but that doesn't sound like your problem.
Are you using an external STB (set-top-box) at all?
Have you tried it on DVDs.?
What signals is "normal" not good for, according to the manual?

I have a SA8300HD. I will play with the menu on the tv and see if I can turn off the auto. I think it says it doesn't have a normal mode for 720p & 1080i signals, maybe my box is sending the SD channels in one of those formats?? I'm still learning this stuff so I'm probably wrong on that. It is just confusing when the "full" mode has bars on the sides like the "normal" mode is illustrated in the manual. I prefer the picture with the bars, so I'm getting what I want, I just always like to know why if you know what I mean..
You've probably got the SA8300HD set up incorrectly, sending 720P or 1080i. See the HDTV FAQ "Tips for SA STBs" and set the unit to "passthrough" or "upconvert" and make sure you run the setup wizard properly.
See the HDTV FAQ on "Black Bars" too.

I appreciate the help, I figured the FAQ section was generic to all equipment. It looks like it is very specific, should get me pointed in the right direction. Thanks!!

I have the A10, and the same SA box. When you are watching your tv, pess the "settings" button on the remote twice. It's on the top left, kind of an odd looking button. This will allow you to scroll through various setting. Scroll up to "Set Picture" and be sure that this is on "pass-through".
Also, if you have not already, be sure to set up the box for the HD tv. There are specific instructions in the FAQ. I would list them here, but I can't remember the names of the two buttons on the cable box to press at once in order to get to the menu.

My SA box doesn't have a "pass through" setting, but it lets you highlight all the signals that the tv accepts...I just selected all of them, and now I'm getting my "normal" mode to work. I still can't get the set up wizard to start...I think I must have newer software, the FAQ instructions aren't working. Everything seems to be ok though, the diagnostics/signal is within the recommended ranges, so no worries. Thanks again....

You get to the pass through setting once the box and tv are turned on.
Then click "settings" on your remote twice.
Then scroll to "Picture Format".
That's where you will find the "Pass Through" setting.

I think my software is different....if I press settings once, a screen pops up that has the option to push the yellow triangle for advanced settings. Within that screen you can highlight "outputs", and you choose which outputs your tv accepts.....I just chose them all: 480p, 480i, 720p, 1080i...I think thats what they are?? Anyway....pressing settings the second time doesn't do anything. I think I have the passport software?? I still haven't found a set-up wizard?? Maybe I need to reboot for the settings twice function to work. I will give it a try. Thanks
