I hope this is the proper area for this post.

I am looking to get a DVD Recorder with Hard Disk Drive. My requirements seem relatively simple.

I want to be able to record from my Comcast 6412, both SD and HD shows, onto DVD in widescreen.

I realize I can't record High Definition to disk, I'm just looking for the best recorded PQ possible.

Finally, I'm hoping to get such a unit for $500.

Any help would be appreciated.

The only two ways I can suggest...(and I could be wrong).
S-video out from the 6412 to an external DVD recorder or PC with a DVD burner.

Or... get a TV capture card in a PC with a DVD burner.(but that wouldn't be able to directly record encrypted cable channels).

Take a look at the HDTV FAQ "Recording HD".

With a stand-alone consumer DVD recorder (even with HDD), you will only be able to record 480i (either by composite video, S-video, or some units have component video inputs, but they're still limited to 480i.

If you want to build an HTPC, then you can download the files from the Motorola via firewire and then burn to disk, either 480i or HD (using several disks or a compression programme).

Can anyone suggest an external DVD burner that would accomplish this? I would like to try this to...

BTW - if I have a HD program recorded on my DVR, will it automatically downsample to 480i when I burned it to the DVD, or would it not work at all?

Depends how you get it off the DVR.

Composite and S-video are 480i.

Component is limited to 480i at the input of any consumer recording device.

Firewire allows you to download the actual file bit for bit to an HTPC. How you burn, depends on you and the software.
