I'm considering purchasing the StarChoice HDTV decoder, which is a
DigiCipher II HDD-201. It will be used with my Navigo 401.
However, from what I can tell, if you are watching an HDTV channel, you can
not press the 'guide' button to view the on-screen guide. You must go to a
non-HDTV channel to view the channel guide! This doesn't seem like a very
feasible long-term product. Once more channels start being offered in HDTV,
does this mean I will also have to flip to a non-HD channel to view the
guide?
Does anyone know if this will be fixed in the future with a software
upgrade?

Option 1 is used for HDTV watching (with the guide being accessible because
of the 401-RCA link with the HDD-201). My Toshiba 50HX70 can't switch on the
fly between 16:9 and 4:3 mode so I use this option ONLY for HDTV watching.
Option 2 is, like you said to be able to tape non-HDTV but also to watch
regular programming without having to power on the HDD-201 (which by the way
is not covered by the replacement waranty of StarChoice - take an extended
waranty on it).
The AC3 sound comes from the 401 without going through the HDD-201 so as not
having to power on the HDD-201.
I also have a 305 which I have hooked up to my PC via an ATI all-in-wonder
8500dv to act as a Tivo PVR.
You can't tape HDTV with anything but a D-VHS or something like that and
they cost way to much for what they do.
