View Full Version : Sony 50/60 SXRD Sets
I just got back from the sony store and happened to notice the new 1080p SXRD sets they had their on display. either they have an excellent callibrator or these TV's are insane. The 60 inch easily blew away my 60 Sony XS model from last year {sadly}.
I'm thinking the upgrade bug has hit again, damn thing never goes away...

MAX,
I recently purchased the Sony KDF-55XS955 after waiting to see the A10 and A20 models that came out in early August so I ask you, what was the main issue that "blew away" our XS model(s)?
Well the SXRD is setup up directly beside my 60XS model in the store and the contrast on it is far superior, when you stand up close to the screen there is no "mosquito noise" and the color just seems so much more vibrant. Also the response time is alot lower at 2ms and the salesman told me I wouldn't see any pixelation during fast action scenes... This I cant guarantee since I did not have a test disk with me.
I guess the best way I could put it is, when I first got an HDTV I was blown away by the PQ, but as 2 years has passed I have become "use to" the picture. When I was looking at them both side by side I had that same feeling again to a slightly lesser extent but it was there.
It has really got me thinking about another upgrade because it is sweet!!!
MAX,
hmm, I was not "blown away"...

57U, so aren't you really saying it's kind of like the best of both worlds?
I mean Sleek modern styling, light and takes up less space, picture qualities of a Well set up CRT without most of the hassle's like burn in, convergance, viewing angles and so on not present...
plus it's 1920 x 1080p native
and they are no longer 10K more. for a 60 inch CRT it is roughly 2k to 2.5K I was offered it for 5.5K which is more than double but like I said I was blown away and like the looks convience and so on...
remeber this is just my opinion,

max, if you can go for it, get the new SXRD set - I have yet to see one next to my 60" LCD Sony set, so it is your preference.
Personally, if I could afford it, I would replace my 48" Mits with its CRT gun problems and buy at least the 50" SXRD.
But first, max, I would play my favourite DVDs and ask the salesperson to access a football game or other action feature in HD and stand the distance away you usually do when watching your programmes, just my thoughts here.

Well 1st your not going to see that much of a diffrence between 1080p and 1080i! There might be a little but not enough to go out and upgrade to a new set. Unless your someone just got the money to do it but wacthing things in HD they will look about the same. The only new thing comeing out next year that will change things is Blu-Ray! Which means your Moives,PC Games so on will be on Blu-Ray disk which means HD moives. The PQ will be a lot better than Standard DVD it will be HD Moives. So the PS3 will support the 1080p where X-box360 does 1080i but again your not going to see a big diffrene in what you watch. Most everyone is watching SD Channels due to there are more of them. So just a warning do go out and just buy a new set just becasue of one thing they have added. The PQ is not going to change much untill the TV Networks Change the way they broadcast things. Thats why the movie industry is support Blu-ray and the moive companys are starting to use HD Camaras. Which means they will be a true HD Format when the get on the Blu-ray disk and hit the shelfs. Again do what you want but to I dont think it's worth it right now. Just my 2 cents is all.
Well 1st your not going to see that much of a diffrence between 1080p and 1080i!.
I saw a noticable difference or else I wouldn't be contemplating the upgrade.
Have you seen any of the 1080p sets available now, or is your opinion a guess? please do not take offense to this question, I mean no disrespect...

I have not seen one of the set's in person but I know the specs on the sets. All you are paying for are some more inputs some extra features. Yes the Native Resolution is good but again its SXRD which is just above Sony 3LCD. So if you have the money or should say if it's in your budget then cool go for it. Main thing is on PQ there is not a night and day diffrence between SXRD and some of the other models is all. Either way the set Rocks so you can go wrong.
Well I went out today to buy the 60'' Sony SXRD, but as always I didn't come home with what I thought...
While I was in the store, my salesman who I always go see told me that while he was at an Electronics show in Montreal he got a chance to see both the Sony SXRD sets and the new Toshiba Cinema Series 1080p DLP's.
From what he told me the Black levels are slightly better on the Toshiba's and the color saturation and brightness was as nice as the SXRD TV's.
So needless to say I came out of the store after buying the new 72 inch 1080p Toshiba Cinema Series DLP. He gave me a 30 day in home trial and if I dont think it performs aswell or better than the Sony SXRD I can return it and go back to my origional purchase.
I really hope this TV meets the expectations he told me about because playing Xbox360 on a 72 inch screen is going to be sweet. The set should be delivered in 2 weeks, I will post a review about it then.

Looking foward to your review max;)
And Intimidators right 1080p material is going to be few and far, blu-ray execs never said anything about 1080p being supported,i'm guess ing 1080i since it's the popular format.
Anyways i'm looking foward to your experiance and hands on approach with the Toshiba:) Tell us how well it performs with videogames,DVD,SD Cable, HD, etc.
Well I called the store today and dropped the order for the Toshiba and told them to send me the Sony 60'' SXRD instead. After reading up on reviews and the whole "wobulation" thing I just didn't feel comfortable with the 1080p DLP technology. I will still take a look at the Toshiba when they get it into the store but I had to go with what I saw and loved in the beginning.

Yeah well Sony's technology is far better than DLP. Just glad to see that your not going with a plasma’s. Due to they have a lot of burn in issues and once you get that your looking at getting another set. This is what I have been told by tech’s that makes house calls to fix sets. Plus right now they are a pain to work on also so if your wanting to d gaming. I would recommend to everyone to stay away from plasma sets. I know on most of the newer Sony models they have a "Game Mode" to turn on before you start fragging. I'm sure the set you are looking at Max has that option. You should be able to pull up the manual off Sony site which will give you that information plus more. Good Luck on everything and let us know how you like your set once you get it in.

max, are you going to sell your Sony KDF60XS955 w/SU-GW12 stand, now?
Are you going to try your own side-by-side comparison with them? It would interesting.
No I am not selling my other Sony "XS" TV, Instead I am going to put it in my livingroom upstairs.
I am going to take the 48'' Sony from there and have a poker game for it, first place takes home the TV and only $50 to sit down and play for it. Surprising enough, I thought it would be me and about 7-10 buddies but now there is like 30 people who want to play for it.
That's $1500 so I think I am going to give $500 to second place.
I will tell you my impressions of the TV a little more when the SXRD gets here in a week or so... Cant wait.

I think upgrading only for 1080p capability would not be the best decision. But if the new technology is a marked improvement at all resolutions, which I suspect there is, then it's likely worth it.
Sony just set another milestone for RP microdisplays. I am sure many others are in wings by many other mfg.s too...but damn, you have to jump off the train at some point! :)
