Checked out the new Sony sxrd60 and it is sweet indeed  But, $5K is steep. Any rumors when 1080-capable inputs will be included (in anticipation of 1080p media being available)?

my guess would be sometime next year, although this really only afects you for PS3 and HTPC as of now. Neither Blu-Ray or HD-DVD has said they will put out movies in 1080p. I read a thread on AVS about a week ago or so saying that blu-ray and HD-DVD will probably not put out 1080p DVD's for a long time, if at all. Instead it will be more like current DVD's where the media is 480i and the player converts it to 480p.

This is only heresay so dont take my word as gospel, I came across it while researching the current Sony SXRD set which I just bought.

So to me whether the player or the sets does the conversion isn't all that important, but do know that the players that are more expensive will most likely do the conversion better.

max, I just went to a store that sells the Sony SXRD sets and the 50 and 60 inch SXRDs where on display with the Qualia 70" in its own room...awesome...fell in love.
This store is quite unlike the big box stores I have visited...no funny analogue channels on or DVDs playing or worse, off...it has all its sets calibrated with HD programmes on each set-this store is a dedicated home theater store written up in Home Theater Magazine.
I say this because this is way I feel it best to adequately judge a set's picture at a store like this.
The A10 50" paled in comparison to the 50" SXRD and the 60" shone over the 62" Mits with its wobblation DLP set, so many rainbows and edges...UGH.
I cannot wait to get the 50" SXRD to replace my 48" Mits with its convergence problems, lack of DVI/HDMI inputs and low angle viewing...good luck getting your SXRD!

Thanks GParris, it should be delivered on Wednesday. Can't wait...

1080p media or not it will still do wonders for 1080i

max, what made you buy the sxrd 60 when you already had the previous 60" model? Just wondering, because I read in Home Theater that the sxrd's still have the screen door issue.

max
10-18-2005, 06:16 PM
I did not notice any screen door, but what really made me buy it was the fact that I saw my exact TV right beside it and it had a very noticeably superior picture.

I loved the look of the PQ, It was all around better than my other TV. From contrast, sharpness, detail, color, everything was a step up.

So I took the plunge and bought it, Cant wait it should be delivered tomorrow.

I loved your previous reviews;)

max, If you do see the screen door effect on your existing 60", you won't notice it on the new one. For me, this is an issue, and I'm waiting for the affordable large screen tv to come out that does not have it. Although, I do wish I had the depth of pocket to buy the new 70" Sony. I'd like to move up in size.

max, I visited the CC store and a home theater store and saw the SXRD 60" set and looking at about 5 feet, could not resolve any SDE or SSE at all.
How Home Theater Magazine could find SDE on a non-LCD RPTV is beyond me to begin with - unless these "experts" are DLP addicts...their call.
Anyway, the reviewer gave the SXRD a 94 out of 100 score, one of their best scores for any set I have seen...had to have been a great set!

Here is some great news, the other day I came across this artice on PC world about an upgrade to the current SXRD televisions to allow them to input a 1080p signal. So I emailed sony and this is the answer I got:

Dear Max ******,

There are plans to release an upgrade some time in the future for the KDS70Q006 and the KDS-R**XBR1 series. The Qualia 004 already has an upgrade available for install through an authorized dealer upon request.

The cost of the upgrade is not known yet for the rear projection units. We will put you on our mailing list and notify you when more information becomes available.

Thank you and we hope we answer your question.

Sincerely,
Sony Support

Needless to say I am even happier now, I am only hoping that the "Upgrade" doesn't cost as much as a new television.

Here is the link to the article I was reading which brought this question to my attention:

You'd better hope it's not like the Mits "promise module" of years ago, which cost roughly the same as a new TV. ;)

Well, it is Wednesday, max, good luck on your delivery and I hope it is a good one.
Your reviews are always welcome and maybe you will be able to insert some pictures as time permits...thanks in advance.
The "Promise Module" from Mits was almost a thousand dollars awhile ago and I am hoping that Sony does not offer that pricing when the 1080p need arises.
Maybe the PS3 will offer a connection as an incentive to buy the players, just a thought.

Do you have some dust on your digital camera? There are quite a few "circles" on the image in the gallery if you blow it up.

Nice set by the way.

The PS3 will :)

It's the first console capable of outputting 1080p, those of you that have the right tv are in for a treat since there have been many titles confirmed for 1080p support.

Yes there is some dust, the first thing I will say about my mini review that is yet to come is, The Video Settings Menu is extremely long and complicated, I thought the XS line was suppose to be Sony version of advanced menu but this thing has about 4 pages full of video enhancements, just looking at it make you scared to attempt. I will give you guys a run down a little later after she is ready for primetime.

Here are a few things I have noticed compared to my XS model:

Pros:
-Reds and Blue's are much more vibrant
-Contrast is Better
-Menu is more advanced "not sure that's a good thing"
-The overall PQ is much nicer on HD
-PC input "haven't tried it yet, but will soon"
-Nicer Remote "more elegant looking" but I will never use it 2 bad.
-No SDE that I see
-Text looks EXTREMELY clean
-Can sit closer to the screen
-Response time is alot better, but still not 100%perfect
-The border to the screen is a nice piano black gloss, the XS is grey gloss

Cons:
-SD is not better, if the channel is really poor the screen looks like a computer monitor.

Overall I am happy so far, These are the things I have noticed in the short time with the set. I will uodate this thread as I spend more time with it and learn more.

Thank you max for the update. Sounds as thought Sony got LCoS right, afterall. :D
Your comments are similar to what I found in that home theatre store I visited recently.
As for sitting up closer to the screen, due to better picture, the 50 inch model at 10 feet vs. the 60 inch model, the 50 incher would be best for SD material, but the 60 inch may not be so overwhelming with HD programmes on the SXRD.
What distance are you watching your new set, max?
It was hard to see where your viewing chair/couch was from the pictures for me...thanks.

max
10-20-2005, 01:33 PM
I am about 10 feet away from the screen, From the stairs which are about 15 feet away the set looks amazing but unfortunately because of a "dumb" pole in my basement I cannot sit that far away. At 10 feet it still looks great so I am not complaining. Right now my Theater is still in it's building stages so hopefully within a year I can fix the room and do the acoustics and what not.

I will post some new pictures of the SXRD on Saturday. I am having it ISF'd by Leo Vildosola from HTCal.com, He is based out in Montreal but I was lucky to call him today because he has another job to do early in the morning on Saturday here in Ottawa. So I booked him for the evening.

I have the same problem with my basement Rec/Gym area with a support pole so the maximum distance for seating is about 10 feet from the 60" Sony LCD RPTV set similar to your XS model. I use a three-seat layout with the center against the pole and the sides of it using the recliners. But if you don't use the recliner feature, the limited pixel feature of the LCD set comes into play it you sit any closer than 10 feet, but with the SXRD, I am sure that becomes a moot point...thanks for the input, max and good luck with your calibration.

max, I see your having the new Sony 60" calibrated. Did you also have your previous 2 60" Sony lcd's calibrated, and if so what general difference did you notice?

max
10-21-2005, 05:32 PM
The other 2 sets I only calibrated with DVE, I liked this set so much I figured I am going to stick with it so I may aswell have it setup to it's best abilities.

I will let you know how it works out...

I look forward to your further information. Just a comment, you might want to ask Leo what issues there may be when the lamp has to be replaced. Does this effect the calibration? I would assume not, but I'm not an ISF certified tech.
Best of Luck

ps: What are you going to do when the 70" sxrd's finally come down in price?

max
10-21-2005, 06:26 PM
I would have bought the 70'' now but the 60'' is a very tight fit down my stairs and the bigger screen just wouldn't fit. "Sucks"

I did even think about the lamp change, thank you for that question! I will be sure to ask...

Well the Calibration did not go so well, It seems from what the calibrator told me, that sony has completely re-designed the service menu with new abreviations and what not, So now I have to wait until he can order the Service Manual for the SXRD sets to be able to make the proper adjustments.

THAT SUCKS!

But it's life, So I will enjoy for now and get it done as soon as he calls me with some good news...

Thanks for the pictures, max, though I am certain that the Sony 60" SXRD, though too pricey for me at this time, is going to be definitely worth it in the near future even without calibration and without, meaning you, still a fantastic picture!

The 60" SXRD set I saw in a home theatre store was almost unbelieveable and I am not certain it had been calibrated.
It seems as though out-of-the box these sets are still going to "wow" most owners and I am glad your set is still enjoyed by you, even without the calibration you wanted for now. :D

Intimidator#3: I had the same problem...click on the link to login and log in again.
It seems as though you have to log in a separate time to get into the picture section.
If this does not work, maybe there is something else I did, but it worked for me.

For all those considering buying a SXRD set, please consider buying from a home theatre or specialty store like I am eventually going to do
(with a good reputation, of course) as these, like the one I was at, actually had pricing cheaper than the big box (CC and BB) stores
...you just have to ask. :)

If I am still going to spend, after discounts, a good deal of money (for the SXRD set) it is going to have to be at a store that knows its products and offers displays with adequate HD setups/feeds so as not to be insulting, but maybe that is just me.

For example, the 60" Sony SXRD set was sitting on its stand if front hundreds of shoppers in the local Best Buy store without any signage, pricing and worse, a bad analogue picture was being fed, which is horrific, IMO. :boo2:

Having been a retail person (including manager) for many years in my past (not now, thankfully), I find this unexceptable no matter what the reason.

Guess who is NOT getting my future SXRD sale?
(Assumption:Obviously they don't want my/our business!)

Good luck Intimidator#3 on the photos from max as he has some nice ones!

Well I found a new ISF calibrator who has worked on the qualia 004 and 006, who happens to specialize in Digital Displays. Gave him a call, his name is John Scott from thesoundchoice.ca if anyone from my area is ever looking for a certified tech for there Digital Television.

I've got an appointment for this Saturday at 2pm, hope this time it goes better.
