I am trying to pinpoint some issues with our NEW 40" LCD. We are experiencing such a wide assortment of issues. I am not sure the best (terms) to use but ghosting, shadowing, fuzzy, noisy, and streaking come to mind.

We have a straight run of RG6 Quad approx 20' max to the tv and that is the only set. Its going through a Motorola 6412. We had a Comcast service tech out today to check things over. He told us everything is "perfect" where it should be as far as signal/noise goes. He swapped the 6412 with another 6412 and no difference at all in PQ.

The LCD is hooked up to the 6412 via component because the HDMI appeared to be the same as far as PQ was.

Our overall PQ on analog, digital and HD is very poor as compared to other days this past week. We had good picture but somehow lost it. INHD was amazingly crisp and clear and our analog was decent for a change with this tv.

We have a call into Sony who has a local service co. schedule 2 weeks from today but that puts us past our 30 day return policy at Best Buy.

Does anyone have any suggestions or things to try?

Thanks - Paul

See the HDTV FAQ on "Poor SD PQ". Suggest you try bypassing the STB for your analogue channels as indicated in that FAQ. Also consider getting a 6412 Phase III, as the Phase III STBs have superior analogue tuners.

Also see the FAQ "Things to check first". I have no idea why your HD would have changed...

Thanks for the reply 57U. I've been spending a lot of time reading the FAQ's the past week or so trying to resolve some issues.

Today we were watching INHD wrestling and found a stuck pixel which seems to have disappeared. Comes and goes.

See pic. http://www.bypauls.com/pixel02.jpg

We parked our old RCA 38” HDTV Widescreen CRT in another room for the Sony 40”. I am wondering if the artifacts I am seeing are the nature of LCD vs. CRT, although I feel we have a real issue with our LCD or setup. Today a bright green line appeared horizontally in the lower portion of the display from edge to edge for one sec. Our WEGA setup screen jumps around, jitters. On sitcoms, a door looks like its breathing. People do not get clear until they stand still then it can be unbelievable clear and crisp.

I have some new words to describe the PQ, grainy, noisy, color banding. Also today we split at the wall and ran RG6 to the 6412 and to the Cable In on the TV. The analog PQ is amazingly close to watching HD Showtime or HBO when it runs directly to the LCD.

So, now I wonder if the 6412 is causing some real poor pictures for us. I have not experienced any issues watching the analog chan. Bypassing the 6412.

It sounds a lot like it's a scaling issue to me - keep in mind that this is from someone fairly new to this whole scene, but that's what I found when I was shopping around.

LCDs in particular seem VERY picky about source, upsampling from a bad signal would result in blurry, pixelated and all around garbage picture. If you're getting random green lines on the screen and misc. pixel issues I'd return it for another ASAP. This is why they have return policies - I suggest you use it!

Return it ASAP. Don't even waste your time on trying to fix it. If the cable guy looked through your internal and external wiring and said its all fine then it should be fine. If you where having problems with your feed coming in it would effect your old TV also. Just maybe more noticable on your new one.

You should have no problem plugging your cable in your TV and getting a decent picture. What happens when you plug in your DVD??

It sounds like for sure a problem here with your TV. Pick up a new one and I'm sure your problems will disappear.
