I just thought I'd post my very brief experience with the LG LDA511 upconverting DVD player. I should have read up on it first, but as a fool, I believed the packaging. As I have read about most other upconverting players, the LG does not upconvert commercial DVD's over the component output (max is 480p). Of course the box fails to mention that important detail at all and I didn't want to spend a lot of money for an HDMI - DVI cable. The divx playback was a pretty nice feature, but I have read other problems other people had with this player. It's being returned tomorrow and I found a really good price on the Samsung HD950 (which I just found out that the US version sadly doesn't do divx). I just want a player that works well, but it seems that DVD is one of the least standard standards out there. I have never seen one player that hasn't choked on at least one disc. If player and disc manufacturers would just follow a standard, it would be so much easier.

Hopefully the directions and set-up for your 950 are better than that of the 841, that I briefly had.......
See the HDTV FAQ on DVI/HDMI Information. You can buy a HDMI/DVI cable for as little as 99cents online. Lots of links to look at in that FAQ. Most cables may be $10-$20.

I have that LG model and it works very good and the CC salesperson advised me about the whole HDMI thing before I bought it even though I already knew better.
The Samsung, if it works as advertised, appears to be a better unit with a black instead of shiny cover, does SACD and DVD-A and includes HDMI cabling...nice deal.
Good luck with the Samsung model.

I appreciate the info, and I have seen cheaper cables on the net. But I would rather get one from a store for ease of return because I wasn't guaranteed a better picture or that the LG player would work the way I want it to. In essence, I was "testing" out the LG and didn't want to start spending lots 'o' money on something that was misleading in the first place. The Samsung 950 comes with both HDMI and HDMI - DVI cables, and I can pick it up for $20 more than the LG, so we'll go from there.

I must say that's a good deal comming with not only 1, but 2 cables, that stores rip consumers off by charging $100 for a cable that is no better than the ones you will get with DVD player. Although, if you are not satisfied with the results a lot of people seem to think monster cable will make it look like 1440P, must be all the extra shielding and care they put into their cables. Let me know how to 950 works, I'm interested in getting an upconverting DVD player. So far, it sounds like a good deal and most reviews I've read are pretty positive.

I Recently Purchased A Lg Up Converting Dvd Player That Up Converts Via The Hdmi And Component Cables. I Returned It For A Different Machine. I Don't Remember The Model Number. It Was A Slim Line With A Vacuum Slot And Two Card Reader Slots On It. It Was The Only Up Converting Player Via Components That Was Out There That I Could Find. All The Others Only Up Convert Thru The Hdmi And They Fail To Mention That On The Box. The Lg Component Jacks Specify That They Up Convert On The Back Of The Unit. Multiple Stores I Visited Told Me That This Was The Only Up Converting Via Component Cables That They Knew About.

That was most likely the model I'm talking about, and it will upconvert non-copyright protected dvds through the component cables. It will not upconvert copyright protected dvds (almost all of the commercial movies). The back of the unit does say 720p 1080i over the component jacks, but only for non-copyright movies.

I too HAD this dvd player until I took it home and read in the directions that it will not upconvert copyrighted discs. However, if anyone is still looking for a good upconverting DVD player, I would recommend this and the Samsung HD950. Both look good on the upconversion on a fixed pixel display. Food for thought, maybe if we tried using Monster THX certified component cables the upconversion on copyrighted material would magically work?? I mean, what else would you pay over $100 a cable for......I thought all 75 ohms cables were the same. Maybe the answer lies in monster cable.

Sorry, but just to clarify: The upconversion WILL work via HDMI (on copyrighted/commerical DVD's?).
For some reason, my Samsung HD-850 kicked the can and I don't know why. I can see the samsung splash screen and get to all the menu's but the second I put a DVD in, my HDMI goes out (I have a 50' akai plasma PDP 5025M).
Any thoughts before I go to the trouble of taking it back? (I thought it might have been HDCP, but I've played all sorts of DVD's on it for about two weeks now). The unit seemed to kick out the HDMI as I was toggling through the upconversions. Tried to disable the HDCP from the player using the code but it didn't seem to work.
The reason I asked about the LG player was because I was seeking opinions on whether to get another samsung (same model HD-850), or switch to the LG (LDA511).

So far my LDA511 is working well with my Sony 60 inch LCD RPTV set and I have had it since June '05.
The setup is easy, the loading and unloading fast and it gives out a great picture. :D
I previewed the Samsung HD850 before returning it and swapped out my LDA511 I had with my Hitachi set for the Sony set, ending up with a Sony 400-disc changer, instead, for the Hitachi set.
It cost me no more than the HD850 on sale at CC, so if you kept your Samsung-supplied HDMI cable, it should work fine for you.
Hope that this assists you and good luck.

My LDA 511 is runing flawlessly. Got an HDMI cable at monoprice.com for 7 bucks, and it upconverts to 1080i nicely, on copy protected disks. Have mine set to 720p, though. For $7 there's no excuse not to go HDMI. In fact I ordered a optical cable along with my HDMI cable for less than $20 total, with shipping. Ordered them wednesday, got here saturday via USPS. (Nice plug, huh?)
