Hi all,

I'm clueless when it comes to knowing what I need in order to get my HDTV working and was hoping someone could shed some light on this topic. Perhaps give a few tips on what to get.

I currently have the following Sony television. Sony KP-51HW40 51 in. This is an HDTV capable television.

My question is what do I need to get in order to be able to view HD channels that are broadcast over the Directv service. (i don't really want to buy any Directv HD package). Is there a certain type of HD tuner that I need? Some tuners say not to use if you have cable or satellite, only if you are receiving HD channels with an antennae.

Also, how would I be able to get HD hooked up to play the new 360 console games on.

Thanks

No package, no HD thru Direc. You will need an antenna and a OTA set top box & antenna if you want 'free' HDTV.

So it probably best to get the HDTV package from DirecTV then?

Also, if I want to use the HD capabilites of the new Xbox 360 console will I need an HDTV television and not one that is only HDTV ready?

DirecTV offers a specific HD tuner that integrates OTA channels with the satellite ones. You can get one with Tivo or just a basic tuner. But just make sure you get the DirecTV model and not an all-purpose HD box.

You will also need the oval triple LNB dish to get any HD content from the satellite. Currently you can get the aforementioned HD package for $10.99. But HBO and Showtime also offer HD channels at no additional charge if you subscribe (no need for the HD package for these).

HD "ready/capable" is fine for external sources (XBox et. al.)

Would you mind posting links to the products you mentioned above? Just to make sure I'm looking at the right things. :)

This is the HD over the air/DirecTV combo reciever. You can find the dish needed down under accessories.

Yeah if you want any of the networks in HD you will half to sign up for a HD package not matter who it is. Only thing in HD you get for free are your local channels.

Right now and in the future DishNetwork is the best for HD. They have more HD than anyone on the market. You might want to go ahead and check your cable make sure it's up to date.

Thanks for the info. I guess I will call a DirecTV rep and talk with them. I would switch to Dish Network however, they do not have NFL SUnday Ticket. That's the main reason why I am with DirecTV.
