Okay I searched but didnt find what I think is my answer.
I have the oppurtunity to buy a 1 month old Akai 47" HDTV monitor rear projection for $600. Here is my potential problem....on the Component ports it says that it does 480i, 480p, 1080i.....my issue is that all the Xbox 360 games are coming out in 720p....will the TV automatically upcovert them to 1080i or will I just get ablank scree? If it upconverts to 1080i then how is the PD? WIll it look blocky, or grainy?? I greatly appreciate anyones help on this as I would love to get it this weekend.

There are a fair number of HDTVs that don't accept 720P signals. It will not upconvert the signals to 1080i, you will simply see a black or blue screen, since 720P is not accepted.
This is not an issue for non-gamers since all STBs will send out a 1080i signal.
You will either need to play your games at 480P or look for another TV. Have a look at one of your games at 480P on the TV, you may be pleasantly surprised...

mmmm It will upconvert to 1080i
The high-definition support for Xbox 360 is dynamic, so even if a game is designed with 720p in mind, but your TV only supports 480p or 1080i, Xbox 360 runs the game in the best resolution your TV offers (up to 720p and 1080i)...Per Xbox.com
So, you are saying that the X-box 360 will upconvert the 720P games to 1080i? (I'm not a gamer, so I don't have a clue)
TVs that don't accept 720P, display nothing, or garbage if fed a 720P signal.

Oh Im sorry...yea..per xbox it will convert the games to the highest ability. Set your xbox to 480p, 480i and 1080i and the xbxo 360 will convert all 720p games to 1080I

I understand you now spottedfool, I will have to go into the 360 settings and select 480i,480p,1080i, then any game that is 480p will play that but then any 720p game will get upconverted to 1080i.

I own a 360. It does up convert to 1080i. All games are requierd by MS to support 720p, 1080i with widescreen. I play on a Philips 34" CRT widescreen, 1080i looks great!!

Yes - the 360 does upconvert. In the 360 HDTV menu you pick the highest supported res of your TV unlike the original Xbox where you check off all supported modes. There were only a handful of original Xbox titles to come out at 720p only. Thankfully, MS got wise and can now upconvert inside the Xbox. Depending on the game though - especiall fast ones, native 720p is going to look smoother and sharper than upconverted 1080i, or even native 1080i in some cases.

well im having an issue with this as well. my tv only accepts 480p, 480i, and 1080i. i set my xbox at 1080i. but when i play the games on the left and right of the screen there is about 3" from the edge of the screen is blurry. but the center is clear as day. its like you are watching espn hd and they have those 2 vertical bars on the left and right of the screen. xbox told me to run it in 480p and not have that great of a picture or to deal with the blurriness.

What kind of TV do you have, and are you hooked up using component cables?
its like you are watching espn hd and they have those 2 vertical bars on the left and right of the screen.
Do you mean when the xbox is set to 1080i you have the vertical bars on the left and right or it's just blurry on the left and right?
::EDIT::
Ah nevermind I saw your other post. It's only the xbox output that looks blurry on the sides? What about HD programs or DVDs? If your convergence is OK then it could be the focus. That's a seperate adjusment (inside the TV) that focuses the individual red, blue, and green CRTs.
If the center looks good it may be your TV just can't focus well on the edges. Pretty much all CRT rear projection TVs are a little blurrier on the edges.

So is this a 360 or Xbox you are speaking of? I have had no problems with this problem you are talking about on any of my HD sets.

yes this is a 360 im talking about.
is the focusing something that can be fixed by a technician? i have one coming over today to take a look at it.
and someone said that i would have to deal with the blurriness as its just the tv. but i dont think it would do that.
hopefully the tech can get it fixed today.

Did this trouble get fixed for you? I too had a service tech out yesterday for my CRT RP. The convergence chip blew and the set is less than 2 years old. Oh well cost me 300 bux for in home repair and also he calibrated both my HD sets from the service menue Picture is better than NEW! Not to mention helped me set up my audio speaker positioning for FREE! Man I love old mom and pop shops, good old fashioned customer service! After the tech left how deos your picture look now?

i still have the same issue of the edges being blurry. the tech said that its normal on rear projection tv's. the center is really clear but the left and right edges are still blurry.
