I have just resently noticed blue lines on my Kp57HW40. They go from about 1 inch from the left side all the way to almost 1 inch from the right side. They are night straigh they curve up and then back down slightly. They start at the top and there is one almost every inch all the way to the bottom. Sometimes i see red ones too but they don't curve nearly as much they are almost straigt. You can only see them on a black or very dark screen. Anything with lots of colors looks great and can't see them or tell at all. I have had the tv for almost 3.5 years now i think.... Never had a problem at all with it.
I have done the auto focus many times and you can see the lines curvature change ever so slightly but they never go away. I also took the back off blew all the dust out made sure all the cards were seeted ok everything looks ok to me. Any thoughts, ideas, or help would be great. I don't know a ton about my tv so please speak in idiotease please for me. Thanks :)

I have this same problem but with Green lines/ovals. Same situation, had the tv almost 4.5yrs and just noticed it on black screens. No other issues with the picture nor are the lines noticeable when there is any images on the screen, just black.
Any ideas where I might start before I call sony service?

Never heard that one...may I use it in the future? :)
Without seeing the display but knowing of your CRT based unit, two things may be happening.
Most probably, since you mention that you see the anomoly (weird problems) only during a "black screen", my guess is that the screen voltage regulators need adjustment. Unless you are pretty technically inclined (the idiotease strikes again), I suggest that you consult with a local ISF tech or service rep.
A simple problem to fix, just one that requires twisting some very sensitive knobs. BTW the displays grayscale will be hosed after the adjustment so an ISF tech may well actually cost you less and you'll end up with an accurate image in the process.
The other possibility is that a convergence IC has toasted itself. These integrated circuits place the image of the red and blue guns over the base green CRT. When one blows, the resulting image will be one of an offset color image to either side of what should be the centered image. Neither of you described that, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
Good Viewing, and I hope I communicated with insouciant impetuosity.

These are retrace lines and are due to the G2 levels being incorrect for the CRT. It could be a bad CRT, a bad driver IC or related component, a bad focus/G2 block, or just a shift due to the aging of the CRT. The first step is to try to adjust it out with the G2(screen) control. Witch to an input with no video and turn down the screen control until the lines are gone, but no further. Then observe the gray scale and see if it has shifted signnificantly. It will likely need to be readjusted in the service menu. If you can't get rid of the lines and/or the gray scale is way off, you may need some service.
