View Full Version : Rear Projection off-angle viewing

I had my heart set on a Sony KDS-R50XBR1 and had decided it was the best set I could buy for the money I was willing to spend, but when I was checking it out at the store for a final time, I realized that it (and every other rear-projection set I looked at) had serious off-angle viewing issues. Even slightly to the left and right of the "ideal" viewing angle and you lost serious brightness, or at least it seemed to me in the store (which was not dark, had bright flourescent lighting, and was certainly not in an ideal viewing setup). Having done a lot of reading around I was really surprised to find that, since I hadn't read much of anything about viewing angle being a problem. When I looked at plasmas and lcds, it didn't seem to really be an issue at all. Could it have anything to do with the location I was viewing it in, or are the off-angle issues with rear-projection sets a real issue? Sadly, the room the tv will go in will not be able to be perfectly set up to allow everyone to be at the ideal viewing angle, so I need a set that can allow for at least somewhat off-angle viewing. Thanks for the help and advice.

This should really only be an issue with CRT-based RPTVs. The TV you mention should be fine at any "normal" viewing angle.

Be sure you're not "higher" than the TV since TV viewing is usually done sitting down.

See the HDTV FAQ on "Types of HDTV" where viewing angle is mentioned...
