I'm looking into buying a Sony KDS-R50XBR1 but I read somewhere that it doesn't accept 1080p input? What does that mean? I thought one of it's big features was that it was a 1080p set? Would I, for instance, be able to use it to view the 1080p function from the playstation 3, or from BluRay, when it comes out? Thanks for the help.

From what I've found I have seen the following:
It won't currently accept 1080p inputs and the reason Sony has given is it's a "copy protection issue" - some garbage about copy protection not being worked out for the new standard.
I've seen a post (possibly on this forum) re: the KDS-R60XBR1 - a user had heard from Sony support that it was supposed to be upgradable after the fact to support it. I've emailed Sony this question and they replied with an 800 # for me to phone.
The email said:

Most 1080p sets can only support 1080p through component, the HDMI chipsets can't support 1080p yet. I believe the new HP models coming out do support 1080p via HDMI.
Almost none of the current 1080P HDTVs accept a 1080P input. If there is a 1080P input, it's usually a VGA input for use with a computer.
There are no 1080P programmes at this time (other than via computer), so it really doesn't make a huge difference...
"1080P Display" on an HDTV simply means that it's the native display format and all incoming signals are converted to that "resolution". Like taking a 480i signal and showing it on a 1080i HDTV - DVD's look pretty good that way with the upconversion.
In the same way, 1080i or 720P upconverted to 1080P should look better. However "format" isn't everything and specs aren't everything.
