I have Samsung HLP 5656w. DLP tv.

and i bought sd-4980 toshiba HDMI upconverting DVD player. OH MAN. its such a garbage. It freezes every 5-10 min for 1-3 seconds. on any movies. Original and Burned dvds.... well yea its only 79$ at COSTCO.

Can anyone recommend good cheap dvd player.

Will I see big difference with Regular Progressive DVD player (420P) over these upconverting DVD players? 720P

Does that 'freezing' occur if you set the player to output 480p?
Have you tried component cables?

It occur on any one of them. 480P, 720P, 1080i.

and using component cables I think will defeat the whole purpus of using HDMI.

At least thats my understanding.

You only need HDMI to upconvert to 720p/1080i. So no, it doesn't defeat the purpose if your considering a new progressive scan player.

If you need a new upscaling player... then it'll cost more than $79.

ok. I understand that it will cost more . :) but whats a good reliable model?

I hear good things about Samsung 800 series upconverting DVD players.

It depends...

How do you know it's not your TV?
Try component cables and see what happens.

IMO... if it works fine, then enjoy until Blu-Ray or HD-DVD players are available and apply your $$ to one of those players. Then you can use your HDMI cable.

Sounds good.

I will probably pick up good Progressive DVD player and use component inputs.

(oh tv works good because i can play dvd from Xbox with compnonent cables)

Again, I ask... why not try component cables with your existing DVD player and see what happens? It may save you a few $$.

I meant that perhaps the HDMI input of your TV may be at fault (or the HDMI portion of the DVD player). Therefore, my suggestion may be applicable.

Well then the Freeze happens. You can HEAR the dvd player is trying to read dvd. You know what i mean? So I dont think its HDMI input is bad. its either DVD player or DvD player :)

Well perhaps that should have been mentioned from the start?
So... get a new DVD player or DvD player.

This is a common problem found in the Toshiba SD-4980 and the Costco version SD-K850. There is a design problem, not manufacturing. If you exchange it, you will get the same results. I already went through two SD-4980s and two SD-K850s, all have the three seconds freeze anywhere during playback. These units are not made by Toshiba, so you know why.

Have you settled with a dvd player walter?

If your looking, look into either a sony, panasonic or pioneer, they make some of the best dvd players out there.

Who designed the players then? ( I would guess Toshiba)
They are to blame, not the manufacturer (which which all know is Orion).

If my assumption is correct, your comment doesn't hold water.
