Hi. I'm a newbie here and I just brought this TV:

Samsung HL-R4266W 42" DLP HD-Ready Projection TV with Digital Cable
Ready Tuner

And i'm trying to get my PIP to work. When I press PIP on my remote, I get a message " Not Available in external input !". Also I've noticed in the menu selection screen, PIP is greyed out. Does anyone know what this means? Do I need another device or something for my PIP to work? BTW I have satellite (Direct tv).

Thanks.

For PiP to work, you need TWO sources of input.

Some TVs do not allow you to PiP any of the external inputs (as you state in red). Some will not allow HD inputs, etc. Read your operating manual what your TV does allow PiP. It may only allow the internal tuner(s).

With Digital TV, PiP is usually a non-starter for most people, unless you have two external STBs, or if you use internal tuners.

Thanks for the reply. Here is my situation. I'm not too concerned with using my PIP to view two different TV shows. I mainly just want to use my PIP split screen for viewing, say a football game on one screen, and watching a movie or playing my xbox on the other screen. Now will I need some other device to do this? Also, I have 2 STB boxes, but I have absolutely NO clue of how to hook them up to make my PIP work.

IF, I repeat, IF your TV allows you to put two different inputs PiP, then what you ask for should work. Read the instructions in the operating manaul how to get say Input 1 in one P and input 2 in the other P....

Remember what I said about some TVs not allowing this and some TVs not allowing HD signals PiP...

The components you want PiP simply need to be connected to the appropriate inputs as they are normally, IF your TV allows it...

I have the HLR 5657 and was able to set up PIP by splitting the cable feed before the STB. One feed goes to the STB and the other directly to the TV. Works great, but I just wish there was an easy way to swap besides going through the menus.

Problem is, he has Satellite, not Cable, therefore he can't do that.

Wayne23 - any luck?

I'm not sure if Satellite STBs have RF-coax outputs, but if it does, you could feed that signal to your internal tuner - channel 3 - if one of the inputs has to be the tuner.

I use my VCR as the second tuner for PIP. My set 5012 does not allow using both antenna inputs for PIP.

I have a RF Remote Antenna free

How do you have this hooked up?

Wayne23, wayne1932 is confusing you, just like Mrasmus. It Doesn't Work That Way With SATELLITE! (They are thinking about Cable).

I think you may be confused when I mentioned RF-Coax earlier. See the HDTV FAQ on "Cables & Connections". I'm not sure if Satellite STBs have an RF-coax output, or whether it's only composite, S-video...

Here is the back of my TV.

Also I contacted Samsung and they say in order for my PIP to work with this model, I would have to get an HMDI cord.

Thank you for the photo, but the "back" of the TV is essentially irrelevant. It's the firmware and connections on the INSIDE of the TV that "decide" what you are able to put PiP.

What you CAN put PiP should be explained in the relevant section of your operating manual...

I have been told by several different sources that you cannot use the picture in picture feature when you have satellite. I have had directv for years and I have not been able to find a single configuration to make it work.

Mize, you can if you have two STBs and if you have two inputs on your TV that you can display in PiP. The question is whether the TV allows it in this instance, since the original poster has two STBs...

Good to know - I have never been able to get PIP working but I have never tried an additional set top box.

If you have any other input, like say a DVD player, IF PiP works for two inputs, you could have one input as the STB and the other as the DVD player...

I saw this in my manual. "PIP will operate only when the video source for the main picture is digital and the source for the sub
picture is analog. "

57U, do you know what this means?

It would seem to indicate the following (and I'm guessing a bit).

1. The "sub picture" source needs to be analogue - this infers a cable signal, where there are still analogue signals or an OTA analogue signal, using the TV's internal NTSC tuner. Since satellite is digital, this is of no use.

2. The "main picture" needs to be digital could mean a variety of things - either the internal ATSC tuner, or a digital signal from SAT or digital Cable STB?, but I think the main point is you're SOL. Probably because the PiP function only works with the tuners and not with any of the "inputs".

Man I give up. Apparently this particular model doesn't work with satellite and i'm not going back to cable just to get my PIP to work with this TV. I've tried just about everything and i'm drained. Next time i'm gonna do some deep research before shelling out this kind of money for something I thought would work. Thanks 57U as well as others for your help. Sorry for the rant.

Some of the newer STBs may do PiP if they have two tuners. My SA8300HD cable box does, but it's a small PiP, not PoP.

I find no need for PiP with the DVR, my full attention can be on what I'm watching and no need to surf or "worry" what's on another channel. If I'm interested in what's on the other channel, I record it and watch it later.

People love their DVRs. People can watch two three-hour football games in 2 hours...

Well after contacting Samsung for the final time, I talked to a Teer2 tech support person and finally I got my PIP to work. Everything was right there under my nose. If it was a snake it would have bit me LOL. Here it is... I purchased a standard OTA at Wal-Mart ($9.97) I hooked it up to the back of my TV in the "ANT2 Air In". All I had to do after this was to get my internal tuner to recognize my OTA local broadcast channels. For example, one of my local channels is 7 (ABC) well with the OTA, channel 7 is actually channel 39. See www.antennaweb.org. Once I did this, now my local channel (7) is broadcasted in HD and man it's a thing of beauty.

Now all I have to do is hit PIP on my remote control, and there is my split screen  . Last night I was able to watch "Lost" on one side of the screen, and I was watching the GMC Bowl in HD (ESPN) on the other side. Both channels were in HD and just beautiful. Now once I got this working, I wanted to give my Xbox a spin to see how it would work with PIP. So I changed the source from component 1 to component 2 which is where I have my XBOX hooked up to. And now I was playing College Hoops on one side of the split screen, while watching LOST on the other side of the split screen. This is what i've been wanting to do since I purchased this TV. At first this was becoming very frustrating, I'm not technical like alot of you guys so all of my joy right now my not be a suprise to you. But I knew there just had to be a way for this thing to work and finally it is. Thanks again for all of your help.

I'm still having problems with some of my other local broadcast channels coming in. I'm getting the " No siganl or Weak signal" message for some of them. I guess this could come from not having a strong enough antenna?

Yes... if all your stations are close and all UHF, I'd get your $10 refunded and purchase a Zenith Silver Sensor antenna.

BTW... you can check Sears if you have one locally. They stopped stocking them, but you may still find one on their shelves.
