Greetings... New to the board. Lots of great stuff... Will take a while to digest... Great reference material.

Have a question that I have not been able to figure out. yes, I am a newbie of sorts...

The Samsung HDTV has one HDMI input. I am connecting to Direct TV HD Sat rcv. with HDMI. I am also looking at getting a Samsung HD950 DVD which also has HDMI. My Denon 5.1 Receiver has component, but nothing higher. How do I hook the DVD player up to get the best video? Can i still use the HDMI somehow?

Welcome to HDTVoice!

You didn't say what Samsung TV you have.

You can look at something like these HDMI/DVI switchers from Ram Electronics:

http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/DVI-HDMI-switchers.htm

Or upgrade to a new a/v receiver with HDMI switching like the Yamaha RX-V1600 (or 2600) (or 4600) depending on budget.

Or use the component video out of the sat receiver and use the HDMI for the upconverting DVD player.

My projector is wired for both DVI and Component but for the sake of convience and the fact that my a/v receiver does not switch HDMI/DVI I use component for both my HR10-250 and DVD player. I've tried an upconverting DVD player (the 950 infact) and was not impressed with the HDMI out. I've also tried the HDMI out of my HR10-250 (HD Tivo) and again was also not overly impressed. Not enough to go out and buy an expensive HDMI/DVI switch box or new receiver.

I did see a difference but it was not enough. Could be because of the Faroudja processor in my projector. The projector itself does a nice job of converting/upconverting.

If the Samsung TV is a CRT RPTV, I wouldn't expend the extra $'s. I had a 65" Toshiba RPTV and couldn't see any difference in the DVI input over the component. With a digital TV you may see a difference. Like I said, I can see a difference with my projector but it is subtle.

This is my opinion for my situation, I'd get more thoughts/opinions from the other members before making a decision.

Good Luck,
Lee

Dennon DVD 900 (Prog scan)
Panasonic PV-V4660 VCR
Pioneer CLD-S104 LD (old, but just can't give it away...)
Tributaries A/V Interconnects
MIT Terminator Speaker Cables
Paradigm Studio Monitor Main Speakers (oldies, but goodies)
Paradigm CC-370 Center Channel Speaker

You may wish to check out this sucker too.

I wouldn't buy an AVR with HDMI switching right now. HDMI is still in a bit of flux with versions 1.0, 1.1, and more to come.

I'm using an HDMI switching receiver -- JVC RX-D702B and it works just fine with inputs from a Scientific Atlanta cable box and Sony upconverting DVD player. However, others have reported significant problems with various cable boxes including other SA ones.

Still, in my case I like being able to switch two HDMI inputs as well as one component through the A/V receiver.
