We've just returned our 1st set because is was clicking off an on irratically every few seconds.

Now with our second set when viewing in 4:3 we have grey side panels. The last set had black. The grey looks awful. Can we change this. I can't find any options to change this.

Thanks for any help.

I believe that is a feature that prevents the black bars from burning into the screen- causing damage to the screen. With the grey, the TV scans the whole screen, preventing burn in problems that can occur with black bars. Please note that burn in only can occur if you watch 4:3 TV (with those side bars), for more than 20% of your time- that you watch tv.

How is it that it is different in the 2 different sets I've bought? I would like to know what others are getting on their tvs.

With a digital channel and upconverted 4:3 programming, you will probably have black bars. If it is non-upconverted, you will probably have grey bars.

I get grey and/or black. I believe this is due to what Ratman posted a few replies up.

The grey side bars are usually limited to SD programming that you can then stretch with your TV if desired.

The Black bars are usually on HD programming and most TVs cannot properly stretch HD inputs.

Some HD channels have recently begun to use grey bars - CBS (or NBC) Buffalo (And CBS or NBC Detroit) for example, but there are only a few of these channels and most still use Black bars.
