I might buy the hitachi 52hm85 dlp rear projection. I understand that they have a start up noise and a cooling fan. I have heard that these sounds are loud enough to be annoying to some people. Anyone know of this? Also, I have heard that lcd projection might might be on the way out as opposed to dlp projection. Is this true?

All bulb based rear projection sets have cooling fans due to the high heat the bulbs put off, some louder then others and yes depending on how sensative you are to the sound of the cooling fans, this could possibly annoy you. DLP's also have a color wheel that rotates at high speeds but it's inside the light engine and usually not heard though there have been cases of them getting loud when they start to fail in earlier Samsung sets.

I doubt either technology is on the way out totally any time soon.

Hitachi or Toshiba?

I believe 52HM85 is the designation for this year's (2005) entry level Toshiba 52 DLP. As such, it does have one fan that runs 24/7. Opinions vary about how bothersome the noise is, but it is notably louder than the previous year's equivalent.
